Thanks :-D
It's been a little minute... but: she's back.
Apparently Bsky didn't like my birthdate being in 2023.
Provides me with the perfect excuse to play this banger:

Late to the party, but I've now worked on over 100 tabletop games π ππ Crossed the line in early Jan :)
I heard recently that Google hit 90% market share, and to avoid investors getting nervy because the company wasn't growing that much, Google made the search results worse. Because if you have to google something multiple times, you're seeing more ads. If there's no room for growth, make some...
Darnit... I only popped on to the KS website to check something, but then I slipped and Wonderland's War Duel fell into my pledge basket. I really should be more careful.
π
Sorry for my late reaction. I'm terrible at checking my BlueSky...
Update: only 2 of the team escaped... Oopsy π¬
Game of Sub Terra on a table. The 5 meeples are almost trapped in a 6-tile cave with a Horror - i.e. a monster that will chase them
Started badly π¬
I can see us losing this game of Sub Terra...
It definitely is...
You'd have thought they'd have weighed those sorts of things up in the report... but instead they focused on how often translators boil kettles and their office block costs, while deciding it was too difficult to factor in the energy usage of AI data centres.
I can imagine someone sitting in a library, talking to their laptop, with the instructions being picked up by the laptop of whoever is sat next to them, and then being asked to be quiet by the librarian. Definitely not workable in the real world
π yeah that sounds about right...!
π exactly!
Yeah, it's an interesting development...
Apologies for the late response - I forgot to drop into BSky
How would that even work in an open-plan office? Or a coffee shop coworking space. Nobody would be able to concentrate and everyone would know exactly what you were typing.
I don't think they've thought this through very well
Really interesting article about the historical events that inspired The Handmaid's Tale:

Report is here, btw. Because: character count: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/689d9d...
Europe Economics has 'compared' the energy usage of AI translation and human translation. The numbers are a nonsense β AI is not some green saviour who vastly outbids us wasteful, gluttonous human translators (how dare we need feeding?!). Here's the take-down: www.loekalization.com/blog/blog/20...
Board game in the Exploding Kitten range. You must follow a route without landing on an exploding kitten space, and you can use your cards to alter outcomes. The board has flipped to a bright red side with a hell theme.
Exploding Kittens board game. This is literally called the "chaos" side of the board. I lost both times. Story of my life. π€¦ (facepalm emoji)
End of a game of K2, a tabletop game about climbing mountains.
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh - staying alive, staying alive...
Second playthrough and the scores were 16-16-15-15
GG everybody πΊ
π yeah it was a bit like that for me... I managed to get just shy of the summit, but then had to abseil down quickly to stay alive. The second time, I wasn't so lucky π
Partway through playing a board game about climbing the mountain K2.
Tonight's gaming: K2. First playthrough. Enjoying it so far, but then no-one has fallen from the mountain and plummeted to their death yet.
Totally different from yesterday's Happy Little Dinosaurs.
Interesting... I'd just seen a map recently that compared second language ability across Europe and Germany scored reasonably highly on that. Scandinavia was obviously top, and then France/Italy/Southern Europe lagging a long way behind. UK was low (as expected)
Agreed, and actually, Germany has quite a high rate of English literacy compared with other countries... The question is: why would someone spend their money on a game if the designers can't be bothered to cater for them? I've read that translations/dubbing etc can be 50% of a film's sales, for e.g.
π [clap emoji.] Translators: "The machines are churning out junk!!"
Tech bros: "Stop whining about your jobs! This machine translation looks absolutely perfect!"
Excellent piece by Danny Hahn on why we literary translators wonβt be replaced just yet!

Completed player transport network in Railroad Tiles, a board game based on Railroad Ink
First time playing Railroad Tiles this evening. Came 4th with 44 points. GG though
Whole book βtranslatedβ for $100? You get what you pay for, and if you donβt understand what makes human translators valuable, maybe you donβt value the creative work that goes into the writing process either.
