I shifted in the stupid nelevah, and wished I could scratch my face. That would smear my makeup, though. "Thou-all art sure we do not have time to change out of this stuff?" I asked. Again. "I fear not." Atosho was trying to be sympathetic. Emphasis on 'trying', though. "So... what's this 'Huvishu' like?" I asked after a pause. "Actually, she's quite vaichuh," Atosho said. We spent about thirty seconds figuring out how to translate that - "charming" seemed to fit. Suddenly Manayka spoke up. "She likes young men." A couple of the women gave him a sharp glance, but he continued. "She always has a pretty semapee or two around." "Lots of women like pretty boys," T'ramoi said, almost interrupting him. Manayka resumed speaking. "Those semapee do not usually stay very long."

It required some translation on the part of Manayka and Atosho to convey the issue: They couldn’t see how to make a gasoline engine be efficient at varying speeds. An engine that worked for walking speed would be horribly wasteful at highway velocity. How could ‘cars’ possibly be practical? I could tell they thought they’d found a genuine technical inconsistency. Atosho had gotten even more reserved. “And when you stop?” Nerugo glared. “Eh-na-gee-na must turn. All etomokeh. Or else fail.” She was nearly as good as the gynologists at dumbing down her vocabulary. I held up a hand. “Can me show-doh? Inside-doh of haikuhchee?” Saloro drew a crude picture of the guts of one of their vehicles. I finally grasped the problem–they had an electric motor for each wheel.[1] “I see. I see,” I blurted, somewhat desperately.[2] “‘Engine’ has…” Crap. I didn’t know the word. I grabbed a ‘pencil’ and sketched a couple of meshing gears. “…‘gears.’ Different size for different… fastness.” A burst of insight. “Also, ‘neutral.’” I mimed pulling my hands apart. “Not… touch. Engine just turn, not make ‘car’ go. ‘Idle.’” I moved one hand in a circle, kept the other one still. [1] In fact, the motors are built into the wheels. The ‘tire’ (which is of course not rubber, but I don’t understand what it is made of; best I can gather, it’s a flexible ceramic?) is like a half-shell around the motor, and can be replaced separately. [2] The actual word was “vabihgeewu,” ‘received.’ As in ‘I have picked up the signal.’

Someone had to know how The Enemy got through the lines and, if they didn’t, they’d better damned well find out, and soon.

Again, there's a distinction made between matters of honor (governed by precedent) and things like regulations & standards. Whether cars drive on the left or right isn't a *moral* thing, by their lights.

But violating standards to the point of what we'd call fraud is not good.
