We put English Hurdy Gurdy Music together in what seemed like a really short space of time at Nigel’s place in Crystal Palace, with Nigel engineering and mixing as we went. It was my first-ever recording, so I had no expectations.
But it did seem to capture something primal – even my sisters like it, and they’re not into folk music at all.
I’ve been writing tunes these last few years and a little soundtrack work too, most notably on House of Guinness and the new Peaky Blinders movie.
We’d love to play some European festivals and finally be able to present English Hurdy Gurdy Music as I’d always intended it to be heard, something we’ve not been able to offer until now. Something completely new.

I want my songs to be little worlds that the listener can lose themselves in for a moment.
It is important for artists to use social media to reach their fans. People love to hear from their favourite artists, and if you don’t have the marketing budget of a major corporation behind you, then it’s the best way of reaching people.
Beyond work, I want to go camping as much as I can this summer and get up to the fells in Cumbria. Swim in the lakes and be in nature as much as possible.

Folk and jazz are both such free genres of music. There’s so much room to make things your own, improvise, and add non-standard chords that still work with the music.
Laughter, as it is often said, is a great medicine, and nowadays we need large doses of it.

Remember that engaging with your local venue doesn’t always mean stepping inside of it.
It’s an exciting time for us at the moment as we’ve just celebrated our 50th birthday – so it’s been a pivotal time of reflection and planning for what the next 50 years will look like.
There’s something very genuine about folk music, especially in its most simple form. It’s warm and has an openness to human expression that audiences may not be able to find with other genres.
The Met in Bury is a wonderful independent venue and we're pleased to be working with them to broadcast a selection of curated folk gigs.
