With its usual lack of foresight, the city is kowtowing to developers that come nowhere near meaningful climate change-informed design. @brenttoderian.bsky.social, where are you when we need you? (Don’t answer that, I wouldn’t come down here, either.) 4/4

It’s also billed as luxury housing, one of many such buildings coming to the west end of the San Fernando Valley as part of the football team’s gigantic development plan near its headquarters. So, little to no affordable housing. And no real plan for improving public transport in the area. 3/

It’s still under construction so perhaps I’ll be surprised in the end, but this is one of L.A.’s hottest, as in extreme heat, neighborhoods. It seems not to even include passive cooling features like window awnings on south- and west-facing walls. 2/

For all of L.A.’s bluster about becoming a sustainable city, this kind of development is springing up everywhere. No evidence of green walls nor green roofs, and since this building is taller than three stories, it’s not required to have solar. Satellite images aren’t new enough to show me. 1/

100,000 Homes: Housing the homeless saves money?
Giving apartments to the chronically homeless can save taxpayer dollars, advocates say
Anderson Cooper: “So it's more expensive to have a chronically homeless person living on the streets than it is to actually subsidize an apartment for them?”
Answer: “Yes, we’re paying more as taxpayers to walk past that person on the street and do nothing.” #HousingFirst #UrbanTruth

It’s been many years since I worked in the fitness business, so perhaps the nutrition guidance has changed for bodybuilders. But if not, this recommendation would have all of us eating more protein in a day than a pro bodybuilder does. Hope you’ve all carved extra time out of your schedule to eat.

It’s that time of year: backyard fruit going to waste by the ton. I give mine (they’ll come harvest it) to foodforward.org in L.A., and they pass it on to food banks and other hunger relief orgs. Your city may have something similar.

Three bags of lemons.
It’s that time of year again. I harvested my backyard lemons to give to Food Forward, a surplus food rescue organization in L.A. that redistributes food to hunger relief orgs. The lemons have gone to Our Story Is, a small op that does a free food box delivery service for folks who are food insecure.

Happy 200th birthday to one of my alma maters, @ucl.ac.uk. My experience there was bittersweet; I completed my master's programme during the pandemic and had no in-person classes. It was a difficult yet sublime year of learning and I'm proud to be a part of the institution and UCL Anthropology.

I'm grateful to have worked as freelancer for this crew for several years now, starting under Laurie Goering, then Amruta Byatnal and Anastasia Moloney. I wish everyone who's losing a job because of this a soft landing and the determination to stay in journalism. It's needed now more than ever. 3/3

Worth noting losses to federal science extend well beyond these programs, e.g., to Dept of Agriculture, Dept of the Interior, and elsewhere. We've lost 30% of our federal colleagues at the USGS National Climate Adaptation Science Center in the past year.
Rebuilding will take decades.

Records hot nights continue in the Gulf of Guinea:
Minimum temperatures 26/29C all month:
Absolutely insane in January
Mins 29C in The Madagascar Channel
Mins 28C in SW Oceania
Mins 27C in The Caribbean
All tropics are smashing record after record:
Unprecedented.

Line graph time series of CO2 equivalent mixing ratio (in ppm) from 1700 through 2024 for AGGI, CO2 alone, and CO2 plus non-CO2 GHGs. There is a long-term increasing trend in recent years only.
Looks like this data was quietly updated in the fall for the latest numbers through 2024 - Annual Greenhouse Gas Index (AGGI) produced by NOAA...
It is now up to a 54% increase in the influence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere since 1990 (AGGI = 1.54; heat trapping)

For those who actually care about evidence-based city-making, there’s a ton of evidence that decongestion pricing has been a massive success in New York City, by every measure of success, and many ways that can’t be measured.

Trump team plans to break up ‘global mothership’ of climate science
Much of the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s non-climate portfolio will be dispersed, the White House says.
The administration of US President Donald Trump intends to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), a world-leading Earth-science centre in Boulder, Colorado.

And now we know that the volume of #Arctic sea ice also dropped to a record low in October (zacklabe.com/archive-2025/).
It's been a historic fall in the #Arctic, which is already a season of rapid climate change. Not good.
