Writing cards for accepted cohort is special as well as a reminder that I have not written in a long time. Hope they understand my cursive, and it does not deter them from joining ๐

Hello blue sky!
Thanks for sharing, I am working with a hospital to help them take stock of their โAI Readinessโ. Do you know of the venues (conference/journals) that are good homes for such work?
Edit: it is *Grassmannian not โGradsmannianโ!
๐The glorious team behind SubTrack your Grad: Sahar Rajabi and Nayeema Nonta #UWaterloo
๐ฅIf you are a PI and want to collaborate, or a student who wants to join my excellent team at #CriticalML drop me a line. We are leading the next wave of innovation at #UWaterloo and are showcasing what inclusive excellence looks like in #AI #ML.
๐ฑ Being at the forefront of this line of work, I can see phenomenal opportunities for the #foundation #models to become efficient and accessible. Funding such works is critical if we want to be competitive, want to #democratize this transformative technology, and address its #climate impacts!
๐ฏJust SubTrack your Grad: Turns out that tracking the gradient subspace can reduce wall times by a whopping 65% (15-20 % on a average). We featured our work across workshops at #neurips 2024 with tremendous response and insightful discussions.

๐คWhile recent works tackle the memory efficiency at the expense of time (GaLore), or time efficiency at the expense of performance (BAdam), our work which tracks the gradient subspace using the Gradsmannian geometry to get you BOTH memory AND time efficiency while being performant!
๐กOkay, I am so excited to announce the preprint of my labโs work on memory and time-efficient training of #LLMs, especially with #DeepSeekโs success bringing this to the centerstage! arxiv.org/abs/2502.01586 #CriticalML #AI #ML

University of Chicago Press has a pretty good sale with deeply discounted overstock from the recent back catalog (stuff published ~2-10 years ago). Got hardcovers of these two books for $11 each. press.uchicago.edu/resource/Sal...
Been listening to this whole day today
youtu.be/OgU_UDYd9lY?...
Itโs been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). Iโm reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.
๐ If you are an #ally or a mentor, please give this signal to the folks around you by advocating for them and listening to their experience. You may catalyze a change in the reward structure, giving them the energy to keep going, perhaps right when they were about to give-up!
๐ฅYou march on and be there for yourself, when you do a tremendous job (who are we kidding, it is pretty much multiple times a day) โ tell yourself how amazing that is, and of course bring together allies and support each other. Also, listen to some good rap to get the energy to keep fighting!
๐ So, what do you do?
๐ฎ In fact, you may get a negative reward when you try to break barriers as it goes against the existing norms, which ultimately may lead you to give-up. This is why it is hard to retain these groups โ they are forced to play the game at the hardest setting!
๐ค In a more #RL way of thinking: making decisions based on external validation (rewards) just maintains the status quo. Especially, for minorities & folks with intersectional identities these rewards are very uncertain, and YOU MAY NOT receive this signal to tell you โ โHey, you are great!โ
๐ I remember feeling something similar. Itโs easy to fall into the trap of thinking that external accolades are the only way to measure your worth.
๐งโ๐Recently I had a student tell me that they will consider a Ph.D. if they got a particular award since it will demonstrate that they are good.
๐ฅBuilding community is essential to our growth and resilience, and am so grateful for this bunch!

๐ We share so much more than we think, and I am always amazed and how much I learn. There are always great ideas and fun times!
๐ณ What started as a casual hangout a couple of months ago is now big enough that we need to be planning ahead. And I am happy to channelize my #WiML (Women in Machine Learning) energy to bring people together!
๐ฑ Watching the exponential rise in the attendance at Women in Engineering (WiE) socials over the past few months is so heartwarming, and a testament to the strong #WiE community at the University of Waterloo
๐ฅ This is what we are embarking on with Grand River Hospital via generous support from the Graham Seed Funding. Together we will lay the foundations of data-centric healthcare in the #Kitchener-#Waterloo Region, and revolutionize how community hospitals leverage data-driven insights!

๐ How they collect, store, retrieve, and manage the data matters the most for building and maintaining reliable models.
๐ค I often talk to companies and organizations who want to use #AI/#ML in their workflows. But before they can leverage these powerful tools, they need to become #data-centric, and what I call โ #AIReady

๐ญOkay, I have to say this. NYT (and I am sure some other news outlets) coming out NOW with articles and opinion pieces titled โHow does tyranny begin?โ is so jarring and infuriating. #Canadian media โ I am also looking at you.
๐ฅThis is the time to reinvest, rediscover, revitalize, and maximize domestic capabilities, and THAT is exciting!
