Labour is a warning for Democrats. If you don't stand for anything and are always just concerned about "swing voters," implementing a "light" version of conservative polices, you'll end up doing exactly this. bsky.app/profile/park...

tl;dr Labour is fascism-lite now and it turns out that people hate that (and fascists will always seek out the real thing anyway). It's one of the reasons I'm always urging Dems to resist the constant calls by pundits to move right, especially on social issues.
wow buddy thatβs really epic! amazing work! so can you put your mommy on the phone
Been doing this since we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan in the early aughts. Also, apologies to Canadians for the presumptuousness. But I do try to be extra polite abroad.

I wrote this piece in 2017.

This thread on Alito's outrageously misrepresentation of the facts in the NY voting rights case is so damning. Alito's account was misleading to the point of falsity. And there's nothing anybody can do about it. He gets to toss around bogus claims without any consequence.
Exactly right: βWeβre long past the point at which there are neutral legal principles that can be deployed to persuasively reconcile all of the Courtβs behavior β¦ It makes the Court at least look like what so many regularly accuse it of being: a font of partisan political power, and not much more.β
Reading between the lines of majority on the parents' treatment of their trans kids is appalling. "The parents were not initially told that their kids were trans. But when they found out they were so abusive about it that the kids wanted to kill themselves. The kids were hospitalized many times."
This almost makes me nostalgic for old school conspiracy theories. Ordering a Time-Life book on alien encounters? It seems downright wholesome by today's standards.
This was a technical mountain climb (UIAA III-IV [5.4]) - like with ice axes and crampons in the middle of winter - not a "hike."

This is not real. It is AI. Fuck off. Muted.
Really? I mean I am on Bsky a lot and I have never accidentally QT'd a nazi. I don't ever even see stuff from nazis. They just don't pop up in any of my feeds.
You are an idiot and a warmonger. I hope you get primaried before you can support Trump attacking Cuba or Greenland.
I continue to be fascinated by the phenomenon whereby an expert engages with any of the LLMs on their field of expertise and is instantly horrified by the wrong answers, and then goes on to use it for things they are not experts in as though it wonβt be just as bad for those.
The entire Democratic strategy debate β "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? β is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close!

The solution to rising prices? Just buy shittier stuff. Duh.
Can you imagine having your office window - your one little portal to the outside world - covered by that asshole's face?

They won't start with banning birth control. First they'll lie about it. Then dictate who can prescribe it, use it, fund it, in what forms, and for how long. Suddenly, your doctor won't call you back. I know this is what they'll do because it's what they're doing to transgender healthcare right now.
I have had this thought so many times.
One of the reasons I think Newsom will prove himself juiceless in any primary (if he makes it that far) is that there is no actual market among Dem primary voters for this kind of Yglesias-brained, internet-poisoned triangulating.
In competitive authoritarianism (US right now) there's often a "loyal opposition" that's essential to the regime. They are so wedded to "decorum," they go along with rites & rituals that help regime prop up veneer of normalcy, undermining clear view of regimes actions & aims.
"The men implicated in the Epstein files reinforces that I spend half my life explaining to men that their simplified, optimistic view of other men doesnβt line up with the experience of women and girls trying to dodge sexual harassment, assault and abuse attempts." - Leslie Morgan Steiner

Out of curiosity, what is so special about Gonzales? I mean the party is chock full of sex pests from the very top on down. It's basically a resume prerequisite to be hired by the Trump administration. Why does this bother them all of a sudden?
(Also, I am genuinely asking, not just being snarky).
Worth reading. The anti-trans movement was never about fairness in sports or protecting kids - it was about making public life for trans people impossible, full stop. And now that they've passed laws about sports and kids, the GOP is working on exactly that - even the NYT has noticed this fact.
The way to retain the best people - who might even realize it and ask for a higher bonus - is to treat them like shit. Obviously.
πThe federal judges in West Virginia, where ICE has been pulling over and detaining people on the freeway, are literally screaming about ICE's tactics.

This is a great argument for more training. Perhaps if they train enough there will be too few of them left uninjured to meaningfully terrorize anybody.
