All shot practically using real lighting, figures, a blender from the kitchen and a price tag I designed and printed out.

If there's one thing I like even more than receiving a book from a New York Times bestselling author - it's receiving a book from a New York Times bestselling author with a painting by me on the cover. @danielkraus.com

β€˜The Bride!’ Is a Failed Experiment Maggie Gyllenhaal’s follow-up to β€œThe Lost Daughter” is an incomprehensible movie mash-up.

In β€œThe Bride!” the director Maggie Gyllenhaal goes for maximalism but ends up with a mess, David Sims writes:

Far-from-the-edge cases Back in 2025, I posted a list of science fiction edge cases, narratives in various media that were either science fiction (but which might be something else) or things not normally regarded as science fiction, but which have some elements. An extreme example (suggested in the comments) is the TV show Breaking Bad, which is not normally regarded as science fiction, but which is fiction and does feature science, with a main character who is a scientist and some ever-so-slightly fictional aspects to the science, and for an added bonus, a creator with a track record of writing things more overtly science fictional.

Evening stroll and dog walk at Bamburgh Beach, Northumberland. Started off relatively cloudy but the clouds started to break up a little aand give some lovely soft light in the sky across the beach and rocks. A worthwhile wander.

IMO, #TheBride! would've been helped immensely if Maggie Gyllenhaal had followed Chanel's advice re accessories and removed a subplot or two.

Bonnie & Clyde + Frankenstein? Cool πŸ‘πŸ»

And Mary Shelly AND a mob boss AND a movie star AND a pair of bickering detectives? Plot overload.

After seeing The Bride! yesterday, I came home and told my husband I realized that's my go-to damning-with-faint-praise description for movies that are an "interesting mess".

IMO, the story could've made the same points more clearly and effectively without the Mary Shelly possession angle.
I wanted to like The Bride! a lot more than I did after this afternoon's matinee.

A muddled, ambitious misfire is a muddled ambitious misfire, whatever the director's gender identity

How about a female viewer?
The clunky Mary Shelly possession subplot distracted from a pretty good twist of her novel into a Bonnie and Clyde tale.
I loved the style of The Bride! more than the plot.

Realized my @titanbooks.bsky.social demons are finalists for both the Bram Stoker Awards and the Splatterpunk Awards. I'm proud of this book, both as a fiction collection and because of the personal connection readers have shared about, whether in their demon days or remembering them.

there any non-slurish reasons to call Israelis, zionists?

Yes I know that’s their ideology but you don’t even call Iranians Khomeinists or Islamic jurists

Just seems people found a loop hole to just saying β€œJews”

This is especially true when American Jews are called Zionists in vitriolic ways

Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack.

Several Republican-controlled states have redrawn their congressional maps to give themselves an unfair advantage in the midterm elections.
