Know Your Disability Rights with Zoe Brennan-Krohn and Nicole Jorwic | American Civil Liberties Union
With Medicaid funding under threat in Congress and attacks on federal disability protections in the courts, we're breaking down the state of disability rights.
Our host @wkamaubell.bsky.social is joined by disability rights activists on this episode of At Liberty.

For exampleβ¦
The lying trump the ignorant. The metaphorical garden path sentences them to a life of gullibility.

EncyclopΓ¦dia Britannica will continue to use βGulf of Mexicoβ for a few reasons:
-We serve an international audience, a majority of which is outside the U.S.
-The Gulf of Mexico is an international body of water, and the U.S.βs authority to rename it is ambiguous.

Closing out the unit by discussing LBJβs Great Society programs in class. Yes, we critiqued some of the implementation, but when I pointed out how many were targeted this past weekβ¦the kids are getting it, theyβre pissed.

USAID matters. I've often disagreed with their strategy and choices, but their work saves more lives than any philanthropy can. It's a rounding error in the federal budget, and one of the best things we do as a country. To see it destroyed overnight by one unelected man is an unmitigated horror.

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.
Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. Itβs not intellectually superior. Itβs the virus theyβre trying to infect us with. NO

Graphic with a quote that reads ββFears and prejudices directed against minority communities are too easy to evoke and exaggerate, often to serve the political agendas of those who promote those fears.β β Fred Korematsu, civil rights activistβ
On the graphic is a photo of Fred Korematsu in his old age, a Japanese man smiling at the camera wearing the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
During World War II, the U.S. government forcibly took hundreds of thousands of people of Japanese ancestry from their homes and held them in incarceration camps.
Fred Korematsu was arrested and convicted for defying the governmentβs order and refusing to go to the camps.

The most dangerous myth US Americans have subconsciously accepted is American β¨Exceptionalism.β¨ While we celebrate our successes, Exceptionalism also means weβve convinced ourselves that weβre incapable of making the same mistakes other people/state make. Itβs not the same when WE do it.
