When I submitted my Word doc list as a supplement, the copyeditors were at first a bit puzzled by this, but I explained what I was trying to do and they seemed satisfied by that
A screenshot of the article title: Reframing oxytocin as a behavioral flexibility hormone
Scientific claims in biobehavioral oxytocin research are dependent on a βderivation chainβ. Theoretical models are the beginning of this chain, which are dependent on a theoretical core supported by auxiliary hypotheses. Efforts to improve biobehavioral oxytocin research have tended to focus on auxiliary hypotheses related to experimental models (e.g., improving oxytocin delivery to the brain, polygenic approaches for genetics studies), and statistical auxiliary hypothesis (e.g., appropriate sample sizes for research). However, even if these issues are addressed, a poorly specified theoretical core (and associated auxiliary hypothesis) can lead to unreliable scientific claims
Oxytocin is typically described as a "social" hormone. In our new article, we propose that it should instead be viewed a hormone that modulates behavioral flexibility

How have I not heard if this Norah Jones cover of Black Hole Sun before? youtu.be/XbQ08Ixczvo?...
Ok pals. Looking to move all my teaching materials open and online, and am developing new modules that I want to start off this way. Content = reading, quizzes, videos, and code tutorials. Opinions on the best platform? Good examples of best practice I can steal from? Many thanks.
If you switch app windows mid-presentation and expect the projector and recording to work as normal, you have a much higher risk tolerance than I do.
One really cool mentimeter feature is embedding within powerpoint, but due to institutional security policies this no longer works. A good solution to this problem I figured out that avoids switching between app windows is to run the slides in one browser tab and the mentimeter in another tab
New post!
It may seem ambitious to ask for individual patient data from clinical trials to be shared, anonymized, for use by other researchers.
But the history of medicine shows us that clinical trials have already undergone a series of transformations that once seemed equally bold:
This would be absolute banger
Whenever @psyarxivbot.bsky.social posts a preprint title in all caps it reads like the title of an 'At the Drive In' song:

TIL that if you search for term in zotero without quote marks, it will search for any instances of words in the term in an article, even if they do not appear together. To search for the full term, you need to put them in quote marks.

I searched my zotero library for 'personal communication', because these tend to be interesting and can illustrate how science really works. I was not disappointed, the most recent one in my library was this from @syeducation.bsky.social. More of this! doi.org/10.36850/mr11
The only bit where you can be even a bit creative these days is the acknowledgements section. Stuff like, "we determined authorship order via MarioKart battle'. I should probably use this a bit more
This is why whenever I'm 50:50 about whether a talk is relevant, I tend to go. Some end up not being relevant, but more often than not these lead to ideas for new work
This is pretty much what happened with one my lines of research. Almost skipped a department talk because I thought it wouldn't be relevant, but I went, and then this led to an idea, which led to a couple of papers and an ongoing collaboration
I think some of the most interesting talks/blogs/posts are the ones that are like, "I went to the wrong talk at a conference by mistake but ended up getting the idea for this paper and a new collaborator". You can't really say that in papers, even if that's how you came up the idea
I so hope this is real

I'll never get tired of using this example, it's just perfect.
I think Iβve finally figured out why Norwegian kids songs are more βinterestingβ musically than Australian kids songs: they go beyond major keys
New post! "Valuing the Process vs. the Product in Research," in which I try to describe some of the tensions around using GenAI/LLMs in scientific research, and why it can be so difficult to have productive conversations on the topic. getsyeducated.substack.com/p/valuing-th...
I got very lucky that twitterβs Golden Age and my postdoc period happened to align. I hope to see bluesky reach the same level of utility one day π€
Here are the slides for a talk I gave earlier today on social media for academics, which includes a mention of an excellent new LinkedIn guide from @emilynordmann.bsky.social

Some tutorial papers be like
If youβre going to write a tutorial paper describing a tool or method, it makes a world of difference showing the paper to someone unfamiliar with the tool and asking them to recreate the examples. Some of these papers can be really tricky to follow
Yeah, vote counting in this context doesnβt make much sense yet most (or maybe all) tools do this! Going to be thinking more about this
