β€œImagine a room awash in gasoline, and there are two implacable enemies in that room. One of them has nine thousand matches. The other has seven thousand matches. Each of them is concerned about who's ahead, who's stronger. Well that's the kind of situation we are actually in.”

Friday 6th March
Happy Birthday to former basketball player Shaquille O’Neal who turns 54 today. β€˜Shaq’ was born in New Jersey and his father was sent to prison when he was very young and he was estranged from him for many years, though he had a good relationship with his stepfather, though his stepfather’s army career moved him to Europe and Texas as a teen.
Shaq was already 6’6” aged 13 and when he returned from Europe to Texas aged 16, he was 6’10” and led his high-school basketball team to the state championship. He then played in college and was top pick in the 1992 NBA draft. He was now fully grown at 7’1”.
His size belied his speed and athleticism (best plays) on the court and he led LA Lakers to three consecutive NBA Championships and won a 4th in 2006 with Miami Heat. Off the court he was one of the first athletes to lean into their celebrity and he released four rap albums between 1993 and 1998. Widely regarded as one of the best basketball players of all time, in retirement his opinions are highly respected in his role as a basketball analyst on TV. He set the blueprint for the modern β€œathlete brand” which has been followed by top athletes in many sports since.
How do you think very tall people feel? How do they stop it being their whole identity?
Is it ok for athletes to be more than athletes? Who’s β€˜athlete brand’ is strongest today?

Friday's TGT wishes 4-time NBA Championship winner Shaquille O'Neal a Happy Birthday. Discuss basketball, athletes as a brand or what it must be like to be very tall indeed.
