Opt-out testing for blood-borne viruses has helped us find people who were previously undiagnosed

New data shows opt-out blood-borne virus testing in emergency departments is highly effective.

The programme identified many undiagnosed infections, including hepatitis C & HIV but particularly hepatitis B. Almost 70% of people with a new diagnosis hadn't been tested before.

Rabies case confirmed following contact with an animal abroad

An individual from the UK has sadly died after becoming infected with rabies, following contact with a stray dog during a visit to Morocco. The individual was diagnosed in Yorkshire and the Humber.

There is no risk to the wider public in relation to this case as there is no documented evidence of rabies passing between people.

πŸ†• Today, UKHSA and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) have confirmed the first detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes collected in the UK.
There is currently no evidence of wider circulation in birds or mosquitoes, and the risk to the public remains very low.
