From November 03 to 14, Simon Böhly took part in the II School on Emergent Phenomena in Non-Equilibrium Quantum Many-Body Systems at ICTP-SAIFR/IFT-UNESP in São Paulo, Brazil, where he gave a presentation on “Probing universal relaxation speed in a Bose–Einstein condensate far from equilibrium.” 1/3

Abstract: What is the quantum structure of spacetime? To answer this question, we need a quantum theory of gravity. In this talk, I will explain the key ideas underlying several different approaches to quantum gravity. In a second part, I will discuss how quantum gravity could affect black-hole spacetimes and how quantum gravity theories connect to modified gravity theories, in which black holes beyond General Relativity are often investigated.

The work by X. Chen, E. Dizer, E.R. Rodríguez & R. Schmidt shows that the impurity's recoil creates an energy gap, stabilizing the quasiparticle behaviour. For the first time, a unified theory captures both regimes – bridging the well-defined polaron with a strongly disrupted quantum state. (3/3)
A single impurity in a quantum gas can behave like a new kind of particle: a Fermi polaron. Theory predicted that such quasiparticles should break down in the limit of a heavy, immobile impurity (the Anderson orthogonality catastrophe). (2/3)
