So we end up in a paradox:
• Open access is mandatory
• Publishing openly is prohibitively expensive
• Preprints don’t “count” for evaluation
• Researchers provide unpaid labor as authors, reviewers, and editors
• Publishers still profit
And what now?

In Poland, institutional funding and effectively my paycheck depends on national evaluations based on publication points assigned to those journals.

Scientists do not want to do free labour for publisher which is fair.
Yes, there are preprints. Yes, open science matters (and I support it).
But to obtain a real, stable scientific position at my institute, I must publish in well-regarded journals.
To say that I’m frustrated would be an understatement.
I’m required to publish open access because funding agency that gave me money for my early-career project supports Coalition S. At the same time, the project budget has ~€1,500 for open-access fees which, realistically, doesn’t cover one paper.
