We have this in our child’s public elementary school (southern California). No letter grades, heavy focus on social-emotional development. Report cards let us know if she’s meeting grade level academic standards but focus on how kind and supportive she is. I agree, this should be everywhere.

But oh my god the focus and dedication on not just the educational fundamentals, but emotional and social ones as well is so essential and why aren't we doing this

I mean I was blown the fuck away.

And it's like, why isn't this everywhere.

It was overflowing with praise (both my niblets are extraordinarily KIND humans) and also identified areas he needed to work on and how they were stragetizing/personalizing that approach.

An area of deficiency was one I shared as a kid, being a tad too bossy.

My niblets attended private school, but I vividly recall the day my brother brought home the younger niblet's first report card and showed it to me. It was dramatically different than the A B C etc ones we got as kids

It was like a 9 page report that focused heavily on empathy

If we survive this, I really hope parents take a long look at how they are teaching empathy to their children. It's so obvious that that is the missing ingredient in huge chunks of the population, amplified by social media algorithms and cultural rewards for reactions rather than thoughtfulness.
