I think I survived the mother, laughing and gently taking her child’s hand to hand them off. She apologized and I thanked her, said it was all right, I’d had two of my own.
Walking into a store as two women and a 3yo toddler were exiting. The child was having a tantrum, threw themselves to the floor than got up and ran, arms out straight ahead, into the crotch of the nearest adult: me.

NPCs have been around a helluva lot longer than video games. These inevitably are the same people who feel empathy only once they can immediately relate ("Now that I have a daughter I don't like when this happens to girls although of course only girls the same skin tone" etc).
