Solar Hoàng Moodboard: an approach to making visual representations of your book that stand out. "Creating a great moodboard may not make you a great writer, but in the process of doing so, you are branching out to other media to learn their way of storytelling and looking at your own manuscript through a different lens."

These days, when that rare newly introduced person extends a hand of hello, I pause and bumble…
err, how does this work?

Holly Riddle. How to tighten up your pacing as an overwriter. "However, when I say, "editors want shorter books," they're not just weeding out the major doorstoppers. More and more genres are trending downward, with a lot of authors (and agents) feeling most comfortable going out on sub with a book that's less than 100,000 words."
We're so excited to share our second blog post! Today's features Holly Riddle's advice on tightening pacing to help get your story to an industry-acceptable word count. Read now on Substack and subscribe for more articles on writing craft and industry insights!

Taylor Grothe: Is this descriptive or is this purple? Four case studies of beautiful prose. And while descriptive, breathing prose is a welcome read, a scene heavy with obscuring description is distracting at best, and DNF-worthy at worst. So, this begs the question: how can you craft a beautiful book without falling into some of the more common pitfalls?
RTM's blog is moving to Substack! Our first post is a feature by horror author Taylor Grothe as they deconstruct four examples of good prose and explain just what makes them so effective.

It’s not hard to see where a billionaire’s interests lie when they publish newspapers or fund gratuitous documentaries.
Spoiler: it’s not the intellectual or humanitarian welfare of a country—or the people reading and watching.
shame on you, JB

I'm a comics creator. Every time I lead a workshop with kids, I see their absolute joy in drawing with their OWN HANDS. If you deny kids that joy by forcing them to type prompts into a computer, you're failing as an educator.
Shame on you for this.

instead of greeting middle schoolers with “how are you,” I say “good to see you” because they’re adolescents and a how are you is loaded.
In class, I do a closer check in.

The problem is how they market and shelve books. It makes it harder for kids to find something that suits their needs and place in this world.
Adults, always complicating things 😏

Isn’t teen equal toYA? Is MG part of YA in their mind?

Dipping into @roundtablementor.bsky.social apps and am overwhelmed at all the stories I want to work on!! Super fun, voicey MG is alive! Can't wait to read but fear the final selection 😅
If you're a teacher, librarian, or parent, what kinds of stories are missing on your middle grade bookshelves?

I've arrived at a place in my writing where I'm not forcing the story I want to tell but embracing the story that unfolds.
Instead of saying, "I want *this* to happen," I hear myself say, "Since *this* just happened, what's my MC going to do about it?"
Then I close my eyes and find out. 🤓

Writers should read books and study craft like athletes watch replays of games. You aren’t stealing, you’re learning.
Read inside your genre. Read outside your genre. Read. Read. Read.

I am terribly behind on reading requested material but I’ll be catching up over the upcoming holidays. We’ve been navigating some challenges with my son with ASD’s school & I’ve been focused on getting him the support he needs until we have a different school option.
