Fecal transplants from older mice found to significantly improve ovarian function and fertility in younger mice
A new study details how fecal transplants from older female mice significantly improve ovarian function and fertility in young mice.
Fecal transplants from older mice have been shown to enhance ovarian function and fertility in younger mice, highlighting a direct connection between the gut microbiome and reproductive health. doi.org/hbq9fx

This work supports the idea that ovarian function is plastic and opens research avenues into therapies to prolong ovarian lifespan. We are grateful to our collaborators, the teams of #SarahBooth at Tufts and #PeterMullen at #USC, as well as to #GCRLE for funding. @uscleonarddavis.bsky.social 11/11

Together, our work shows that the aged female gut microbiota can promote ovarian health in young recipients (including decreased inflammation and increased fertility), which we hypothesize is due to compensatory signaling in the bidirectional ovarian-gut microbiome communication. 10/11

Analyses of the transplanted microbiome and serum metabolites in #FMT recipients π© revealed that (i) the microbiome was lastingly remodeled, and (ii) that several interesting pathways had been remodeled in post-estropausal #FMT recipients, including VitK and NAD metabolism. 8/11

Consistent with transcriptomics 𧬠results, we observed overall improved ovarian health (based on follicle counts & serum AMH/FSH/INHA levels), as well as shorter time to pregnancy for post-estropausal #FMT recipient mice π, suggesting that aged #FMT functionally rejuvenated recipient ovaries. 7/11

Consistent with decreased inflammation, comparison to known #aging and #senescence gene signatures by GSEA showed a significant decrease in expression of such signatures, suggesting partial molecular #rejuvenation of the ovarian tissue in response to the post-estropausal #FMT. π¨ 6/11

Surprisingly, mice that received estropausal #FMT showed trends for decreased inflammation of the ovarian tissue at the transcriptional level, as well as the protein level for pro-inflammatory IL6 staining in ovarian tissue. 5/11

Thus, we decided to perform #FMT from aged and old female mice into young female βοΈmouse recipients π. Interestingly, we observed dramatic remodeling of the ovarian transcriptome in response to #FMT. 4/11

Art by Dr. Rapheal Williams representing the gut microbiome/ovarian axis with aging.
When we were starting this study, there was already data supporting lifelong gut/ovary communication, and, based on previous #FMT work showing deleterious effects of #heterochronic #FMT on the π§ , Minhoo reasoned that aged, post-estropausal #FMT π© should damage youthful ovarian function. 2/11
