temperature check: i asked a friend of mine in the oil industry what she (GASP A GIRL? IN OIL??) thinks the market is gonna look like by the end of the month and she just sent me this in response with no other text. [I have no idea if she is serious]

I think most of the trans people I know who fled dangerous states ended up in safer legal contexts but more precarious or outright dangerous living situations. Some can't find work. Some moved into abusive situations. Some just struggled with loneliness and stress. That deserves attention.

We need to acknowledge the vulnerability of trans refugees to safer states. Not only do we struggle with employment and housing, our circumstances put us at risk of mistreatment and abuse.
We know this broadly about refugees, but often downplay it when discussing trans people within the US.

America has a long history of pointless and wasteful military adventurism. And in our quest to normalize Trump weβve stuck his Iran war in that box: βanother war, just like the rest.β Itβs not like the rest. Itβs an act of insanity, rogue state behavior. Donβt know how this ends until we admit it.

Platner leading Mills by 24 points among people earning over $100k while trailing narrowly among those earning under $50k is, ngl, both *deeply* unsurprising and flat out hilarious

i think there is a very simple explanation for this, at least in 2026. the cultural apparatus orbiting around Trump lives in a world entirely governed by short feedback loops.

Another example: no, it's not "now more likely that Iran's Supreme Leader position will be abolished than any given person taking the role." It's simply what the most gamblers on the platform are guessing will happen.

Like... no, you're not "projecting" or "calling" races, Polymarket. You're showing people the current betting line and misrepresenting it as something more than that.

I think one of the things that bothers me the most about the way Polymarket presents itself to the world is that it's adopted the language of journalism to make itself sound more legitimate. Like look at this post from yesterday morning incorrectly "projecting" the winner.

A U.S. citizen. A Hmong elder. No criminal record. Agents rammed his door, dragged him outside in freezing weather β even though the person they were looking for had been in jail for years. Secretary Noem still wonβt say it was wrong.

A thorn in Trump's side his first term were senators at the end of their careers who couldn't be pressured -- McCain, Corker, even Flake.
I think we're about to see a new wave of those folks, and whatever the motive -- true repentance or shameless ass-covering -- they'll help erode his standing

Every so often I think about how so much of our current mess is the result of not having sufficient investigative and prosecutorial resources to go after rich rapists and domestic abusers with any reliability.
In a better timeline, Hegseth and Trump would be enduring de facto life sentences.

The judges in WV have seen enough.
They say that if the ICE continues detaining people in ways they have unanimously deemed illegal they will start issuing civil fines and contempt findings β including against state officials who help them carry it out.

WASHINGTON, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine are monitoring the U.S. operation in Iran from President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where Trump is currently located, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.
