White text on a blue background. The text reads - "this stoneware jar is part of the Royal London Hospital object collection. The jar was used to store leeches. It has a lid that locks by twisting the metal clasp. It has holes so that the leeches could breathe but not escape. In 1837 Barts bought 96,000 leeches for use in the hospital. Leeches were still in use at Barts up until the 1930s. They are still used in micro surgery and plastic surgery to help restore blood flow." On this week's episode we looked at the dispensary accounts for the hospital which showed the purchase of leeches. Here you can see an example from our collections of a pot used to store leeches 🪱🪱

Spanish PM Sánchez responds to Trump:

"Spain is against this disaster... Govts are here to improve people's lives... It is absolutely unacceptable that those leaders who are unable to fulfill that mission use the smoke of war to hide their failure, and in the process, fill the pockets of a few."

My feeling is if they were disappointed with the ‘product’ they received they shouldn’t have accepted the degrees.

It’s like finding a fly in your restaurant soup, and only complaining when you’ve finished the last spoonful. It’s like buyers remorse.

I am pleased to see she comments 'potential difficulties remain – including whether the instructions and technology for reading the glass would remain available for future generations' as I was beating my head on the desk, sobbing and laughing hysterically from years of archivists hearing similar.

oh god. It's going to be a day in which we are forced to tap the 'the world didn't start in 1900' sign every five minutes, isn't it?

Anyway, stop firing your premodernists, stop making them feel irrelevant, stop making them do just the introduction sessions of 'the real' history.

Black and white photograph showing two female records clerks, both wearing work coats; one on a ladder is retrieving or returning an x-ray from the shelf in a wallet which reads "x-ray wallet"; the other appears to be checking files against a paper list.

If you're new to our service you should know that we are more than just St Bartholomew’s. We hold the records of more than 30 organisations, including medical schools, maternity homes, poor law infirmaries, and much more.

I love showing students the Barts admission registers and them seeing how many people died from scratches/fractures/splinters. Then showing them how most deaths after the intro of antibiotics become age related disease/degeneration because antibiotics allowed patients to not die from a splinter!

Possibly 7th richest person in the UK but I think the point still stands

While a student Andrew served in the Home Guard and fire-watched at St Mary's and at Boosey and Hawkes, the music publishers on Regent Street - which enabled him to expand his already formidable knowledge of classical music. After one night bombing raid, Andrew entered a ward to be greeted by the sister. One of the patients thought there was a bomb under her bed and the nurse wanted Pollen to reassure her. He duly went to see the patient, looked under the bed and retrieved a partially hidden incendiary bomb. It had entered the ward through an open window. He rapidly disposed of it. The patient was relieved, the sister speechless.

Amazing story about a doctor on fire-watch duty during WW2.

A meme of 'Is this a document?' showing a grid with various classifications of things that might be documents based on their content and structure, graded between purist and radical. Each box has a matching image of the contents, including the USS Enterprise, a WAV waveform, the Boarstall Cartulary, and Scrabble.

And also the festive follow up 'Twas the Nightshift before Christmas'.

Instead of conferring titles, gongs and baubles and then demanding those titles, gongs and baubles be removed…

…perhaps as a modern, mature polity we should have far fewer titles, gongs and baubles in the first place.
