A note to my fellow awards watchers ahead of the BAFTAs this weekend: Keep an eye on Robert Aramayo from the beautiful drama I Swear. His performance as a man with Tourette’s is spectacular. He’s up for Best Actor and Rising Star and has a shot to win one or both. He’ll be Oscar eligible next year.

I interviewed Robert Duvall once (with his wife Luciana Pedraza for their lovely film Assassination Tango) and was pleasantly surprised to see that the intimidating guy I knew from The Godfather and Apocalypse Now was actually quite friendly. For me nothing tops his performance in The Apostle.

It’s a very special night on TCM tonight as I’m cohosting with my brilliant friend Bob Mackie. Join us at 8ET/5PT as we premiere his wildly entertaining new documentary Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion, followed by Pennies From Heaven, for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.

Diane Ladd’s passing today saddens me but also makes me so glad our TCM film festival and cruise exist. Diane joined us on the cruise in 2019 and it was so special to hear her stories and feel her passion firsthand. Sending love to her family and friends.

What a pleasure to interview the ridiculously impressive cast of Jay Kelly, directed by Noah Baumbach, at a special screening of the film. It’s in theaters next month (and on Netflix in December) and it’ll remind you of everything from Preston Sturges to Cinema Paradiso. Just gorgeous.

Today is the day this guy’s new movie comes out. Paul Thomas Anderson is an 11-time Academy Award nominee who will be a 14-time nominee come January. And thanks to the spectacular One Battle After Another, he should finally be an Oscar winner by March.

Catching up with one of this year’s Silver Medallion tribute recipients (and great friend to us at TCM), Ethan Hawke. He’s here in Telluride with the Richard Linklater drama Blue Moon, where he plays songwriter Lorenz Hart, and his fascinating Merle Haggard documentary, Highway 99: A Double Album.

I’m sad to hear about Lalo Schifrin. I interviewed him for EW in 1996 and asked about his iconic Mission: Impossible theme in 5/4 time. He said, “I always say that things are in 2/4 or 4/4 because people dance with two legs. I did it for people from outer space with five legs.”
