It's tough to win when you (and the entire management and media aparatus around you) are thinking about not getting hurt before Opening Day. Even yesterday, the commentators were laughing about the idea of Skubal choosing starting in the championship game over Opening Day.

By definition they were always the deepest. No Motorita Felicianos or Fernando Cabreras anywhere on their roster. Those arms seem underwhelming now, but they built those teams around the best bullpen arms at the time, because of pitch counts. And they had Chipper, A-Rod, Jeter, Wright, etc.

That's understandable. There are weaker teams like Czechia, Brazil, and Nicaragua in Japan's, the Dominican's, and the U.S.' groups. But Group A is all evenly matched and most games there have been good. The knockout stages are obviously going to be insanely good.
