This is a good analogy. Very useful in carefully controlled settings for specific usages, but unfortunately being widely inserted into everything and used without training or PPE and poisoning a lot of things and people and we’re going to pay a tonne of money to remove it safely in the future

It wasn't entirely planned, but a series of unfortunate events not limited to a pandemic, illness, unexpected family bereavement and a cocked up eye test meant I had a load of lessons then stopped. Hated driving but was going to restart and casually mentioned to friends that I'd get used it...

I would encourage those who can (and that's more than you think!) to enter this FREE contest. Sure, the odds are low of winning - but did I mention it's FREE? And potentially life changing for a writer. And entering contests is a great incentive to polish that piece of work.
Deadline 16th March.

The picture shows two dolls with movable shoulders, elbows, hips and knee joints. The legs of both dolls are partially broken off. One doll's arm is almost completely missing. The limbs and torso are very long, the breasts small. The faces are largely destroyed. The hair is combed back behind the ears, reaching down to the shoulders at the nape. The ivory, which is actually white, has turned brown over time.

Beloved #toys: a pair of #Roman ivory #dolls with articulated arms and legs found in a tomb of a little #girl from a wealthy family in Emona, Ljubljana/Slovenia.

The majority of the dolls in Roman times were made of less valuable materials such as clay, wood or linen. 🧡1/2

I obviously lack the same nuance. We are being drawn into an opportunistic war fought for US reasons at a time when the US is demonstrably not supporting the UK.

I've no issue with the evacuation - it absolutely may be needed. I've also been a diplomat involved with planning for evacuation (a very long time ago). For Brits not paying UK taxes, which will be a large numbers, there should be post-evacuation charges.

Enough politics. It is publication day for the paperback edition for The Far Edges of the Known World; it's a book that has been described in reviews as both strikingly and refreshingly original.

So if you fancy reading about the ancient world from a different perspective - give it a read!

This is eccentric by the standards of the median British voter, and British Muslims have far more socially conservative views than the median voter, by a huge distance. This is especially true regarding homosexuality and the role of women. The most ruddy-faced bar room reactionary at the 19th hole is a blue-haired college radical in comparison. (Incidentally, I’m also not sure how the Green party squares their environmental transport policy with the fact that British-Pakistanis tend to favour cars, as social conservatives with families.)

Thank God Muslim voters in Manchester overwhelmingly decided to vote for the female candidate in the party led by a proud gay Jew, then. Guess your analysis is wrong!

🏺Time Team, then DFB showed how much appetite there is for solid, fieldwork-founded, object-exploring & narrative archaeological public communication.
People want to understand time and their place in it as individuals, communities & a species, and effects of this have a unique power for cohesion.

Could be fertility too. Maybe mixed genetics that way produced larger family sizes. Or maybe neanderthal men were in some way better at ensuring child survival (maybe in the research but paywall). So many possible explanations for an interesting finding.
