I've read two vinge books, fire upon the deep and "rainbows end" and both of them were like WOW THIS IS A PILE OF COOL STUFF
....
what did I just read?

wait for real? errr... uh for however much 'real' is appropriate.
also I don't really remember the plot to this book. I just remember the tines and their uhhhh telepathy? and the whole thing about 'levels of tech complexity' based on orientation with respect to the galactic plane.

On the other hand, I think that for the same reason that people will talk to ChatGPT, they will want a robot in their house that looks and acts like a person.
Also, think about space. Do humans need to go into space? No. But WE GET TO GO INTO SPACE!
Now take the inverse. WE GET TO HAVE ANDROIDS!
I agree and disagree. I think in a sort of local optimization sense, you're totally correct. I've worked with some small scale robotics things and in fact technically work with them in my current job. They do not look like people because that would be pointless.
I realize that distraction might not work for a pup play dog park.
Or maybe it still will. People seem to love facesitting...
if you need to practice talking small talk to strangers, a dog park is a fantastic place. everyone is there for the same reason; people generally seem to like talking about their dogs; and if things get socially awkward your dog will probably eat the shit coming out of another dog as a distraction
"ooh ooh I know what they're saying and I already have my reply ready GO!"

this camera is a nice little camera in that it fulfills the "I want to spend 800 dollars to buy a brand new PASM-control mirrorless camera with kit lens that's perfectly usable" need, but it's nowhere near a flagship with good support.
That's the G9 / G9ii for panasonic m43.
TIL that my Lumix G95 will not connect as a USB storage device to my m2 pro mac mini. there's no errors that come up or anything, it just... doesn't. Trying to use the Lumix iOS sync app on macos also doesn't work, but to be honest, doing that with your phone and the camera is like "eww" anyway.
"proudly wears the helix" has the same vibe in my xennial brain as "he is of the cuniform"
(gotta get in a reference to Hyperion, RIP dan simmons I guess, even though he was apparently a conservative racist and misogynist)
I am very specifically not saying "drone" because around these social media parts, drones are not quadcopters and they're probably people who have been brainwashed into being service tops with null bulges.
or remote-control war crimes.
humanoid robots have the problem of being humanoid-sized robots with current battery technologies, and also needing a lot more horsepower in terms of computation compared to "four motors, an IMU, a camera, and a radio" like a quadcopter.
I have a nagging feeling that humanoid domestic robots are going to be like quadcopters, in that they're going to just sneak up on us in terms of being 'usable'.
quadcopters did this without a lot of hype, I mean seemingly one day you could buy a DJI phantom with an m43 camera and wow holy shit.
Bofa? What app is that? Is it a nut selector?
I hope this doesnβt awaken anything in me
Is that a water slide
Would it be better if we developed those sorts of natural language command -> workflow process things using something that isn't "a neural network trained on the entirety of human shitposting and SEO spam and copyrighted works of art"? Yeah.
Why I wanna know what in ^^ isn't the LLM bits at all.
"transcribe these notes and take all of the questions asked by people and separate them off into action items assigned to product manager ABCD in Loop" (unsure if you can actually DO that in Copilot) ... that's a fine feature. That's helpful.
I suspect that all the work on these agentic 'task algorithm' sort of things is where the real 'usefulness' will come from. It's like one click subject selection in photoshop. I don't know if that uses LLMs or just some machine learning CV stuff, but it's a fantastic workflow tool.
to me, the really problematic uses are the big 'information jumps'. text prompt -> photo? this is an enormous information jump. It tricks you into thinking you're doing something but you're not doing it and no person is, and the output is sort of a mashup of 'average' and 'most likely'
agentic code generation/coding tools? this is probably a use case that's like... trending towards being the next abstraction jump in software development, hampered by the hallucinatory LLM bits. Like sure you can vibe code and also it seems if you Do The Work on input the output can be Fine.
I'm trying to get my head around the whole "what is bad and what isn't about LLM-based AI tools" and okay so there's the "the training process results in plagiarism angle", that's a thing
"I can type words and it outputs an image indistinguishable from a photo" is a pandora's box we can't close...
I don't really understand how "Claude" can be conscious. What's the definition of 'the model'? Is it just the matrix of neural network values? is it the orchestration software around it which lets it do something? is it only the agentic systems that can perform long chained operations?

One of the things thatβs wild is that the pictures are security camera scrunkly AND still have slop nonsense like a weird number of cat trees or products that look clone stamped but arenβt identical
Slapped.
Okay so that thing in that movie (the machine) had suckers on the nipples and me, as a teen boy fresh off filling his head with stuff from Nancy Friday books my parents thought theyβd hidden, was like
