Thank you to ANC 1D and Mount Pleasant Village for hosting a wonderful candidate forum! If you liked my priorities — from building all types of housing to creating a seamless network of bike lanes — please help me take my message to the people.
Correct. Council should have passed these bills back in August. They keep asking MPD for information they never mandated MPD to collect.
As chairman of ANC 1B, I brought in the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety to answer tough questions about MPD and ICE. Republicans in Congress will *never* do proper oversight, so it’s on us. The Council should pass these bills & as a CM I’ll work to ensure they’re implemented

What a beautiful weekend for canvassing! I want to give a HUGE thank you to our amazing volunteers who dedicated their weekend to speaking to voters with us.
Ward 1 knows what’s up. Make the residential composting pilot a permanent program. Increase the number of smart bins. Replace our open-air rat buffets, I mean litter bins. Install more litter and recycling bins. It’s not rocket science; it’s good municipal management.
say it louder for the people in the back
This back-and-forth between Council & MPD about ICE cooperation stretched over months — and yielded unsatisfying results at every turn. Council needs to conduct more & ongoing oversight, not only at budget time.
MPD should be able to explain readily how its taxpayer-funded resources are being used.
Really user-friendly policy change from @bikeshare.bsky.social today! You can now park an e-bike adjacent to a full station (≤3 open docks) without paying the $2 fee. Very fair in a system that still has much more demand than supply!
DC needs to retain these businesses & do MUCH more to welcome new, locally-owned, staple businesses. Seniors in Chinatown shouldn't have to leave the state (!) on a chartered shuttle bus to find a high-quality, affordable Asian grocery store.
Also featured in this article: A. Litteri at Union Market, the Italian import/deli gem, which at 100 years old is "the busiest that [they've] ever been." Thank goodness.
Speaking of local retail — El Progreso in Mt Pleasant is the only place I can find polvilho azedo, the key ingredient to pão de queijo. I love that store with my whole heart. I'm so heartened to see them featured here and thriving. Shop local, y'all

Streets on U! This is good news: a locally-owned grocery business can serve as a strong anchor on the U St. corridor. We need more neighborhood staples like grocery stores, mid-range everyday restaurants, and local retail to diversify & keep vibrant our local economy.

Happy to see some wins for DC in a hopeless time on the Hill — and especially $250k for the installation of solar-powered bike docks for @bikeshare.bsky.social 🥳
Thank you @eleanornorton.bsky.social!
As we continue to prioritize equitable, reliable, and accessible transportation for all, it’s important to not only honor the legacy of those who came before us but also recommit ourselves to building a future where everyone has the freedom to move safely and with dignity.
Public transit remains a powerful tool for expanding access to opportunity, strengthening communities, and creating a more just and connected city. Transit is, and always has been, a racial justice issue, and Black Washingtonians deserve equitable transportation systems.
This Black History Month, we celebrate the trailblazers and innovators who have shaped public transportation and advanced civil rights around the country and right here in DC, such as WMATA’s Carmen E. Turner and Rosa Parks—whose birthday is honored today on Transit Equity Day.
I have the record to prove it, and I look forward to continuing to serve. Visit my website to learn more about my transit priorities: miguelward1.com/priorities
I had a great time at Monday’s Ward 1 D.C. Council Candidate Forum on Transportation Issues, where I spoke about my plans to improve DC’s transit system. I’m proud to have been a consistent advocate for transit riders, cyclists and pedestrians, during my term as a Commissioner.
“As your councilmember, my focus is going to be on delivering the bus infrastructure upgrades that are stuck in the pipeline, waiting for funding. That's a problem the council can actually address….I’ll prioritize reliability and frequency.”
Forgiven ☺️ thanks for the live coverage!

“We can’t make housing affordable if it doesn’t exist.”
Last night at the DC for Democracy candidate forum, I talked about how we can realistically get a handle on housing costs, drawing on my work as an ANC commissioner fighting for more, and more affordable, housing.

It was such a pleasure to join DC for Democracy at their candidate forum tonight, unpacking the issues that Ward 1 truly cares about!
I got to highlight some of my campaign priorities - making DC more affordable, building community safety, and protecting our vibrant communities.
Mark your calendars! This Thursday at 8pm, I will be participating in DC for Democracy’s Candidate Forum.

It’s official: ranked choice voting is here to stay. As the proud lead organizer for the I-83 campaign last year, I’m grateful to everyone that helped block this misguided delay tactic.
Now, let’s get back to the important work of educating voters and ensuring everyone’s voices are heard!
