My goes-way-beyond-the-data-theory is that this can happen when surveys are fielded somewhere "younger and hipper" online where opting-in is correlated with intellectual curiosity / broadmindedness and thus liberalism in older gens, but not in younger gens, so older gens look more progressive
Looking across all gens, I feel like there's some weird sampling or collider bias going on, as each generation gets progressively more sexist (i.e., in their data boomers > gen x > millenials > gen z in terms of progressivism) which goes against 99% of other studies www.kcl.ac.uk/news/almost-...

These captchas just keep getting harder #rstats
I don't know him (had to leave NFL fandom due to watching too much other sports) so for a millisecond I thought you were talking about Luther Head and got MEGA excited
Unfortunately, I'm super predisposed towards the latter! I'll predict this one has a few-hour half-life.
Got some fuzz in my mouth at the coffee shop. Stuck my tongue out to pluck the fuzz, and right as I reached my hand to my tongue, I made eye contact with a stranger across the shop. I am so sorry, stranger, I know you have no idea what I was doing.
my optimistic take is it seems the US/EU general public learned our lesson from our past blunders in the Middle East. Very few being suckered in under "rally around the flag" pretenses -- most war supporters just seem to be Islamophobes + trait-violent people

Each one of those three missiles costs 33% more than the annual budget of the national park where I work.
Lol, there's a WWE pay per view event in Chicago while I'm at a conference. Come to my session on relationships on Friday at 8am. I'll let you hit me with a folding chair
This is looking like a pretty strong crew if we need to do battle pub-for-pub -- your move, Zoteroids!
New post! "Valuing the Process vs. the Product in Research," in which I try to describe some of the tensions around using GenAI/LLMs in scientific research, and why it can be so difficult to have productive conversations on the topic. getsyeducated.substack.com/p/valuing-th...
Thanks, Moin -- A lot of my thinking about AI use is a jumbled, grumpy mess, so your process/product distinction is super clarifying. BTW I'm one of those references-by-hand sadists (it helps me better memorize specific publications for future offhand reference)
This isn't scholarshipβit's mimicry.
Not scienceβa performance.
When the "writer" understands syntactic patterns but not the underlying meaning, the product loses its soul. Sure, it's in APA format. But under the hood? Slop.
Scientific writing isn't just ritual. It's where true creativity resides.

This piece argues that psychodynamic constructs become scientific when treated as hypotheses about interpersonal dynamics over timeβan idea Leary had decades ago.

Posting this because @langealexandra.bsky.social will love it. American activist and graphic artist Tana Hoban was born on this date in 1917. There Can Be No Patriotism Without Liberty [...], photographic print with gouache, 1950:
Yes!!! I think of these chills as a potentially universal biological component of openness to experience (From the preprint you all cited back in the day, now much more polished in published form). Once the GWAS is published so we can share the sumstats publicly, I'd love to see what you all find!
Follow up on the genetics of chills from art and poetry. This time, including chills from music too 𧡠β¬οΈ
Why are some males caring toward infants while others are neglectful or abusive? I'm so pleased to share work that my colleagues and I @princeton.edu have just published @nature.com (an explanatory thread to follow!) (1/8)
I can only assume your class will be delightfully abuzz. (I agree! Plus the way they track the bees by bedazzling them... very clever).
Bee personality!
"Although bees could choose from multiple routes, we discovered that individual bees follow idiosyncratic paths with striking and repeatable precision."
Mental gymnastics meme. TOP: Regression mental gymnastics. The effect is significant...even when I adjust for...everything we have measured. BOTTOM: Causal Inference Mental Gymnastics. unmeasured confounds could explain the effect the sample might suffer from selection bias differential measurement error! SUTVA violation!
Almost done with my next lecture, so going back now to work on some new memes

New blog post about the age-period-cohort identification problem!
In which, for the first time ever, I ask "What's the mechanism?" and also suggest that sometimes you may actually *not* be interested in causal inference.

im so excited to know this much about the drivers, i'm still such a noob
I was having so much fun, it was so close and I was constantly awed at how good a driver max was. Unfortunately I decided after the first race to root for Gasly which was maybe the most boring decision of my life
