Happy Gary Retrograde everyone!

The next two weeks are the only two weeks out of the year when Gary Numan is older than Gary Oldman

My goes-way-beyond-the-data-theory is that this can happen when surveys are fielded somewhere "younger and hipper" online where opting-in is correlated with intellectual curiosity / broadmindedness and thus liberalism in older gens, but not in younger gens, so older gens look more progressive

Looking across all gens, I feel like there's some weird sampling or collider bias going on, as each generation gets progressively more sexist (i.e., in their data boomers > gen x > millenials > gen z in terms of progressivism) which goes against 99% of other studies www.kcl.ac.uk/news/almost-...

These captchas just keep getting harder #rstats

Unfortunately, I'm super predisposed towards the latter! I'll predict this one has a few-hour half-life.

Got some fuzz in my mouth at the coffee shop. Stuck my tongue out to pluck the fuzz, and right as I reached my hand to my tongue, I made eye contact with a stranger across the shop. I am so sorry, stranger, I know you have no idea what I was doing.

my optimistic take is it seems the US/EU general public learned our lesson from our past blunders in the Middle East. Very few being suckered in under "rally around the flag" pretenses -- most war supporters just seem to be Islamophobes + trait-violent people

Valuing the Process vs. the Product in Research On reasonable resistance to using GenAI in research

New post! "Valuing the Process vs. the Product in Research," in which I try to describe some of the tensions around using GenAI/LLMs in scientific research, and why it can be so difficult to have productive conversations on the topic. getsyeducated.substack.com/p/valuing-th...

Thanks, Moin -- A lot of my thinking about AI use is a jumbled, grumpy mess, so your process/product distinction is super clarifying. BTW I'm one of those references-by-hand sadists (it helps me better memorize specific publications for future offhand reference)

This isn't scholarshipβ€”it's mimicry.
Not scienceβ€”a performance.

When the "writer" understands syntactic patterns but not the underlying meaning, the product loses its soul. Sure, it's in APA format. But under the hood? Slop.

Scientific writing isn't just ritual. It's where true creativity resides.

This piece argues that psychodynamic constructs become scientific when treated as hypotheses about interpersonal dynamics over timeβ€”an idea Leary had decades ago.

Yes!!! I think of these chills as a potentially universal biological component of openness to experience (From the preprint you all cited back in the day, now much more polished in published form). Once the GWAS is published so we can share the sumstats publicly, I'd love to see what you all find!

New blog post about the age-period-cohort identification problem!

In which, for the first time ever, I ask "What's the mechanism?" and also suggest that sometimes you may actually *not* be interested in causal inference.
