Inwood Park Ablaze as Brush Fires Reach Historic Levels Across NYC Firefighters have responded to more than 200 brush fires in the past two weeks, including nearly two dozen in Van Cortlandt Park in The Bronx, as the city reckons with an historically dry and fiery season.

NEW: A brush fire in Upper Manhattan’s Inwood Hill Park began at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, hours after the FDNY reported it had responded to a record 229 brush fires citywide in the last two weeks.

Update: Brushfire still burning over significant part of Inwood Hill Park. Large FDNY operation underway, include marine vessels drawing water from river. Thankfully winds are not strong.

Public is advised to avoid the area, and nearby residents should keep windows closed.

How to know you work in tech: I just realized I put up an OOO notice on Slack last week, but forgot to set up an OOO auto-reply for email because it’s such an afterthought for me. I also removed work email from my phone for the holidays so if you’re trying to email me, too bad!

The Bitter Taste of β€˜Not Too Sweet’ Asian Americans have claimed the phrase "not too sweet" as a defiant shorthand and a cheeky rallying cry. But is that maxim really true?

Big one from me: I wrote about the phrase "not too sweet" in Asian American communities, and the fine line between a loving in-community meme and an exclusive stereotype www.eater.com/23991259/not...

I know we all know this but just a reminder, get ALL the free tests your household is owed, every time, even if you still have a stockpile because it’s one of the few direct tools we have to communicate to the government that WE STILL NEED FREE TESTS and there’s still high demand for COVID resources

I know I’m old because my teen and tween children are unable to explain the use of the word β€œzesty” to me in a way that my adult brain can comprehend. (I think I should get partial credit for understanding β€œriz,” though I’d never dare try to use it in a sentence)

Opinion | Long covid has derailed my life. Make no mistake: It could yours, too. No matter how immortal we feel, we are all β€” still β€” at risk of developing crushing, life-altering symptoms.

"The United States has always been a terrible place to be sick and disabled. Ableism is baked into our myths of bootstrapping and self-reliance, in which health is virtue and illness is degeneracy."

The paperwork is telling me that my youngest child will graduate high school in 2030, but that’s obviously a made-up Star Trek year, here in the real world it was 1997 just the other day

I think the rule for AI is this: would you let a child with excellent diction, grammar, and access to google but a five year old understanding of logic and the world we live in write this?

No?

Then lol okay

It also made me feel tenderly toward Andrew Ridgeley, who befriended the awkward shy gay kid in elementary school and was so proud of his buddy’s success

If you are a person of a certain age who wants to experience some ’80s feels, may I recommend the Wham! documentary on Netflix?
