To run a half-marathon is to repeat the feat of Halfassides, who left the fennel fields of Marathon on the heels of Pheidippides, stopped running halfway to Athens, and lived happily ever after.

Wood carvings of the side of an altar showing episodes of the life of Mary Magdalene. After the noli me tangere (left), the boarding of the small boat is depicted. Two women and three men are already on the boat. Circa 1536. The altar, like the reliquary, are in the Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume basilica.
If the local tradition is to be believed, Mary Magdalene herself founded the church of Provence. How did she end up in Gaul? The same way Aeneas ended up in the Latium: she came by sea. According to the Golden Legend, she was forced onto a small boat by "infidels", who then set the boat adrift.

Behind a wrought iron fence, the bronze bust of a woman with long hair. In lieu of a face, the bust has a glass screen through which one can see a human skull. I used a black & white filter to accentuate the metalness of the picture.
How metal is this reliquary containing Mary Magdalene's purported head?

Perhaps I shouldn't have but I altered Agnes Jacques's translation, which has the wave press "between her eyes".
In the original German it's "zwischen ihre Lider", and it seems to me "between her eyes" and "between her eyelids" have pretty different meaning?

Thom Yorke's eyes as the water that's slowly filling his helmet reaches his forehead. The left eye is half closed, the right eye wide open. Little bubbles can be seen around both. From the "No Surprises" video clip.
"Understanding, forgiving, emancipated, he closed his eyes. But hers took in once more the gray bank rising up in the menacing dusk, and before the indifferent waves pressed between her eyelids, her dying look drank in the shadows of the fading world."

Jinyong Lian β Trust Me
The festivalβs central show, Women by Women, celebrates how women express and imagine themselves while confronting the growing fragility of their rights and visibility. Lianβs Trust Me series (semi-fictional portraits of Asian women) explores self-doubt and emotional control. The PhotoVogue festival 2026 runs from 1-4 March during Milan fashion week at the Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense

So here is "Flute in a pig in a tub"
The next one, "Tuba, lute, fig panini" will be less topical.

GΓ©rard de Nerval's eyes from a photograph by FΓ©lix Nadar. The photograph was taken less than a year before Nerval's death, which occured on this day in 1855.
"he lost the concepts of real and imaginary, and jumped from reason into that which we call madness, and which may merely be a state where the soul, being more intensely stimulated, perceives invisible connections, unnoticed coincidences, and enjoys spectacles which elude the material eye"

A woman's head, voluptuously tilted back. In the fog that embraces her, one can make out a vaporous face: a brow, a nose, a cheek. Two pools of darkness form the eyes, which are looking straight into the woman's face. As for the foggy figure's mouth, it seems to be kissing Io's right cheek.
Stendhal, who was #botd in 1783, had a particular fondness for Corregio's work.
"Those lovely eyes, in which was revealed the most profound boredom, and, what was worse still, a despair of finding any pleasure, came to rest upon Julien. At any rate, he was not exactly like all the rest."
Stendhal, "The Red and the Black", Scott-Moncrieff's translation

The letter to his grandmother. He extends his wishes to his aunts and uncles, and expresses sympathy for the one aunt who has lost her dog. The writing is neat, with perfect spacing.
The letter to Ernest Chevalier, who was a year older than him. The writing is much less neat, with words crossed out, crooked lines, poor spacing etc...
After opening with the "New Year is dumb comment", he goes on to comment on La Fayette's retirement, says he has written liberal political speeches which he promises to send to Ernest, writes about the two kids' dreams of becoming writers: "I will write comedies and you will write your dreams"
These two letters were written on the 30th (left) and 31st (right) of December 1830 by a nine-year-old Flaubert.
The first one is for his grandmother: "I hasten to fulfil my duty by wishing you a happy New Year..."
The second one is for his friend: "You are right to say that New Year is dumb."
