But it doesn’t! It’s just a bit underwhelming, and transparent, and dull. Kind of annoying to work with. But in its own annoying way, green earth is a material that has been there for us every time that we needed something stable, cheap, reliable and yes, green.
Green is not like blue –a color scarcely present in the mineral world. Green earth is not rare and green minerals are relatively easy to find Why didn’t green make the list? One day I used natural green earth for the first time and then I understood. My thought? "This sucks!"
I’ve always read that the first colors ever used (and named!) by humans were black, red and white, with the later addition of yellow. This is because these colors where readily available in nature in the form of earths and rocks. But what about green?
#Greenearth is one of the staple greens we’ve been using to make art. Despite that, I don’t think I could find anyone who would list it as a favorite #pigment. But this –let’s use the proper adjectives– annoying pigment contributed greatly to my understanding of the importance of materials in art.
