Kambo is practiced by Panoan-speaking peoples (which includes the Huni Kuin, aka Kashinawa, where I was staying).
There is a huge cultural overlap with ayahuasca.
I heard it referred to as "vacina de sapo" (frog vaccine), but Kambo, and its variations (KΓ£pΕ©, Kampun, KambΓ΄...) is more common.
Two males participants in a Kambo ceremony sitting on a bench in the jungle, waiting for the purge.
The 30 minutes or so after the application of Kambo πΈ are spent sitting, waiting for the medicine to kick.
You don't get any visions or altered states of consciousness with Kambo, but you get a full and deep body cleansing.
After a little while, you start purging (vomiting) the water.
If like me you struggle to find psychedelics related accounts on bsky ππ½
The Huni Kuin people patterns (called Kene Kuin) have received recognition as a cultural heritage of Brazil.
These patterns are found everywhere - in their face and body paints, traditional clothes, ceramics...
Here' a short and interesting documentary on the topic:

Excited about attending a talk on the future of psychedelics!

A Huni Kuin medicine man applying Kambo onto a female upper arm, using a knife.
The skin is burnt using a small wooden stick. Then, the dried frog secretions are scraped with a blunt knife and applied on the burnt skin. Water helps the secretions to dissolve and enter the body.
It doesn't really hurt, but it's uncomfortable.
The more applications, the stronger the effect.
A laddle emptying a thick manioc (yuca) juice in a bucket. The liquid is slightly opaque.
Before a Kambo πΈ ceremony, the first thing is to drink water π§. Plenty of it. Between 1 and 2 litres.
Water can be replaced by manioc juice obtained from boiling the roots. It's a thick liquid, and is tasteless. It is taken on an empty stomach, that's why Kambo ceremonies take place in the morning.
A small green frog hanging on a tree branch on a dark background.
My first reaction was disapointment: where are the frogs?
Typically during a Kambo ceremony, you don't see the frogs. Their secretions have already been extracted and are stored dried on a piece of wood.
So here is what the frog looks like (from Wikipedia): Phyllomedusa bicolor, bicolor tree-frog.
New thread on my experience with Kambo πΈ in the jungle of Brazil with the Huni Kuin people.
Before going there, I had heard of Kambo but never had the opportunity to try this medicine. It consists of the application frog secretions on burnt skin.
Let's see the different steps ππ§΅
If you speak French π«π· there's a superb series of podcasts on indigenous people and the challenges they face.
The take is not entirely negative though and some episodes are quite uplifting!

I watched (listened) this talk at the gym, on the opposition between indigenous healing traditions and western medicine.
It's a honest presentation and touches on topics such as cultural appropriation, colonialism. Worth a watch!

Then She Is a Shaman, a beautiful documentary about a Peruvian female shaman who works with #ayahuasca, it offers a raw, non idealised image of her everyday life in the jungle.

I watched a couple of short and recent documentaries on #psychedelics this weekend.
First, When the Smoke Clears follow US first responders as they go to a retreat in Mexico to work with psilocybin, bufo and herbal cleansing baths.

If you're interested in indigenous cultures and traditional plants medicine, I've got a Pixelfed account where I post photos:

I've noticed we came a long way since that time. I listened to this series of podcasts from France Culture (I'm a French speaker), which comes from a radio programme from the 60's:
www.radiofrance.fr/francecultur...
Some of the things they say about psychedelics is now completely outdated.
I'm planning to go with a friend.
I hope that'll inspire me to read MisΓ©rable Miracle and Connaissance par les gouffres.
There's another free session starting soon on psychedelic practitioner fundamentals.
I'm excited for this one because it's about honouring the sacred!
Maybe see you there

A San Pedro cactus growing inside a white Brugmansia near a house.
One last photo to end this thread on San Pedro.
It is a San Pedro cactus intertwined with a Brugmansia (Angel's trumpet), which is closely related to Datura, another psychoactive plant. Although there, it was purely an ornamental plant.

Another pot of boiling San Pedro! This one from Ecuador.
Unlike the one prepared with fresh cactus that I shared earlier, this one is made from dried powder.

A pan filled with San Pedro slices simmering over a stove.
The cactus is sliced and boiled in water for a few hours.
Here's a photo I took when my friend was preparing it in Peru. I was in charged of skimming off the froth, which makes it bitter.
Some people add lemon squeeze for a better taste.
A large San Pedro in front of a sweat lodge.
Here's a photo I took while spending time with a Tayta (a shaman) who works with San Pedro and vision quests in the mountains of southern Ecuador.
San Pedro is prepared in the form of little pellets. You would ingest 2 or 3 before a sweat lodge ceremony. I have photos of neither unfortunately.
