What this great thread highlights is *norms*. Rules only stop actors from doing things when the rules are enforceable by an authority with the power to stop you. Norms, on the other hand, are what stop you from doing shit on your own volition, because you believe in the principles undergirding them.

I nearly ended up in this article. A friend was visiting from out of town. My husband and friend picked me up from work and on the way home we showed her Leonard Cohenโs grave. The photojournalist was taking pics, but she chose one with visible kisses (not ours). www.nytimes.com/2026/02/26/t...
thunderous clouds being dramatic
๐จ It looks like the UK government is gearing up to upend copyright law in favour of AI companies, legalising the theft of their work.
This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public.
Please spread the word.

How great! ... and has been happening in Montreal over the last decade. More greenery, traffic-calming features. Cleaning up alleys, planting greenery, creating social spaces for the neighborhood in them. I appreciate it a lot.

The use of #AI in news WITHOUT human editors overseeing the results is problematic. A minor example, from the Washington Post app, can't be human-error, can it? Article about DHS listed under 'Climate' makes me wonder what else is being missed. Thoughts? @wapotechguild.bsky.social
Smart piece from @megansquire.bsky.social arguing that the proliferation of AI โdeepfakeโ nude images should not be thought of just as a social/cultural issue, but as a cybersecurity threat. The production of this stuff plugs into a world thatโs often criminal.

Imagine flirting with the risk of a rogue element of a failed state ending up in control of one side of the Strait of Hormuz, especially after what the Houthis have done to the Red Sea and the approach to the Suez Canal for the past few years.
The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez Pรฉrez-Castejรฉn ยฉ i.3h-Q@ on Facebook: The world, Europe, and Spain have faced this critical moment before. In 2003, a few irresponsible leaders dragged us into an illegal war in the Middle East that brought nothing but insecurity and pain. Our response then must be our response now: NO to violations of international law. NO to the illusion that we ca solve the world's problems with bombs. NO to repeating the mistakes of the past. NO TO WAR.
