📸 #FromTheArchives: This photo from 1980 depicts an ICRC tracing agency office in Cameroon.

The Central Tracing Agency is one of our oldest institutions. It traces the fate of the missing & helps families restore contact – a service that it continues to provide to this day.

A call to make international humanitarian law a political priority ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric outlines the pressing need for states to join the Global Initiative on international humanitarian law.

The growing normalization of violations of international humanitarian law poses an existential threat to int'l law.

We invite states to step up to their responsibility, reverse this trend & join our global initiative to reinvigorate political commitment for #IHL.

The ICRC is deeply concerned about the fact that the mass graves in Syria are being opened and human remains are being unearthed.

Protecting and preserving the integrity of graves will allow the forensic experts to proceed properly, minimizing the loss of information about the burial and the remains, and to take all the needed steps to pursue the identification of the human remains, with the main goal of providing the families of the missing with more chances to find answers regarding the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones.

Until an identification system is established, recovering the remains may result in loss of information and compromise the potential for identification.

It is better to keep the remains protected by leaving them buried. Once an identification system is in place, the excavation of graves can proceed.

In view of the extent of work to be done to organize proper management of the deceased and their further identification, the ICRC strongly recommends that all mass graves across #Syria are protected.
