NASA didn't spend any money developing a space pen. The Soviets didn't use a pencil.
The space pen was made by a random inventor who spent his own money on it. Both NASA and the Soviets used it, because graphite dust from pencils is a fire hazard in the weightlessness of space.
Before the space pen I think they both used grease pencils, which if you don't know don't use graphite (aka "pencil lead") and are more like crayons. Idk if either ever used regular pencils regularly on crewed space flights. But I'd have to double check and my internet connection is spotty right now

I think a lot of us millennials & older really take it for granted that we were the last of only a couple generations where there was an all-encompassing campaign to encourage literacy. Everyone used to agree upon it. There were commercials with your favorite celebrities just being like, "READ!"
