Checking up on local nest box cameras the other day I came across something I have not seen before in ~30 years of monitoring barn owl boxes....a tawny owl in a box with a pair of barn owls! Thankfully a couple of days later the barn owls were still present and the tawny owl had moved on.
Last night marked the first time the adult female peregrine (VTR) in Poole roosted at the wooden nest box overnight, signaling that egg-laying is imminent.
Ringed Curlew. Redshank. Wigeon.

Hardy's Return of the Native, although fiction, is very rooted in the real landscape, and suggests that bustard were fairly numerous in the heaths in the early 1800s.
I had a Hummingbird Hawk moth in my garden this morning, Poole, Dorset.
That is the earliest I’ve seen one and it was cold and breezy.
I guess it overwintered here. lyndalambert.bsky.social @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social

Spring has begun... over the last week we have received 35 reports of Sand Martins, seven of Swallow, four each of Wheatear and House Martin, and two Red-rumped Swallows! #ukbirding
Nice to see the Sarnie Terns back on Brownsea on Friday, presumably the same adult and 1stW bird that have overwintered, but still seemed like a sign of spring @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social @harbourbirds.bsky.social

Isn't it the most dense deer population in the country? There has been more culling recently but don't know if it's had any effect?
