I have no doubt that Heated Rivalry WILL shift things. It just remains to be seen what those effects will be and if it will actually be a net positive.
At the end of the day though, I am so happy for Rachel Reid. What a ride this must be.
And what about TV and film? Will we get more romance shows (and queer ones) or will we just get steamier ones?
Will we see more respect for wholly Canadian-produced art or will the Canadianness get erased or overlooked?
MM has been a quiet niche for a very long time. It was the kind of space you either weren't aware of or didn't enter unless you got its appeal and were part of the club.
More attention means more scrutiny and more judgment even if it opens opportunities.
Is the market going to get flooded with copycats or will it open up more opportunities and a broader audience for existing MM writers?
Will publishing take the wrong hints from this and push explicit (straight) sports books instead of queer love stories?
As an MM writer with their first conventionally-published book coming out soon, I am going to be so interested to see if there is a #HeatedRivalry effect. And if so, what form it takes.

There are situations where piracy IS morally defensible, especially in the days of massive for-profit conglomerates, streamers removing access to shows and general greed of Hollywood.
But the book industry is not like that for the vast majority of authors.
Secondhand bookstores that sell books for pennies, libraries, etc...are all ways to get books for free or cheap. Sign up for ARC teams, get books for free.
There are so many ways to get access to books without doing the equivalent of stealing a handmade item from a small local giftshop.
When you steal a book, you're not stealing from a large corporation (or not JUST stealing from a large corp in the case of the big 5) you are stealing from a small business.
Many writers, even popular ones, have other jobs or are making a very modest living.
The only water writing should consume is in caffeine form as you power through to your deadline.
