‘Fake news’: A guide to Trump’s favourite phrase – and the dangers it obscures
Journalism is not a crime: The president has weaponised the term against the press, but dangerous misinformation has proliferated under his watch, writes Alex Woodward
In reading up for this article, this stat came up:
Between 2016-20, the president had said/written “fake news” 1,906 times.
“While the president has used the phrase to undermine reporters holding him and power to account, actual fake news has proliferated.”

A screenshot of a news article titled “Editorial: Can we future-proof the language of chemistry?” The opening art is a television’s showing the dictionary entry of the term “global warming”
Journalists lost a lot of public trust when politicians turned the term “fake news” (a term journalists came up with!) into a weapon. Similar things have been happening in the language of science. I got to spew a bit about it in @cenmag.bsky.social cen.acs.org/education/sc...

As always @markpeplow.bsky.social's stories spark curiosity, but this one about cuprocene also sparked debate: sandwich or hot dog? Well, cuprocene is definitively a sandwich. A guide to making gukulenin A
3-component assembly builds a natural product that could fight cancer
I love a good complex natural product. This one has two α-tropolones, 10 asymmetric stereocenters, and a a labile hemiketal. After a longstanding effort, chemists in Seth Herzon's lab have made (–)-gukulenin A. My latest for @cenmag.bsky.social

What causes space weather and how does it affect Earth?
The aurora borealis is a spectacle of space weather, but solar flares and coronal mass ejections have far more Earthly impacts
It’s pretty exciting that we might see big auroral displays in Maryland tomorrow night! Last fall, I couldn’t believe how purple the sky got… anyway, if you’re interested in how CMEs and solar flares form, check out the story I wrote last month for C&EN! 🌌☀️

Why scientists found lead in protein powders
Consumers shouldn't panic
Yes, there's lead in protein powders. No, there's no known safe level. But, exposure to trace amounts is inevitable, especially since plants naturally take up lead from the environment. And, people disagree on standards for manufacturers. Latest @cenmag.bsky.social: cen.acs.org/food/food-in...

In my reporting, I found out that there are a bunch of “Swedish-type” candies that are growing in popularity in the US. I got these (fancy?) Swedish jellies for myself. Pretty good!

Why inclusive design is good for more than access—it expands the boundaries of discovery
"Inclusive design doesn’t just widen participation; it expands the very structure-function relationship of science itself. We all stand to gain from that."

Now, I am so grateful that the @acs.org and @cenmag.bsky.social have celebrated chemists with various disabilities in this years Trailblazers issue!
