there are some pieces that are rehearsed and performed without conductor but pretty much all are rehearsed and got into shape with one . football teams have their manager shouting and pointing from the sidelines
imagine giving a play to a company of actors and asking them to put it on stage with no director . stage directions may be on the page …. but everyone’s got a slightly different idea of how to do it . how do all these individual performances coalesce into a cohesive performance ? Answer -a director
