How much power do hyperscalers use, and how much would it cost to go fossil-free 24 / 7 ? - Reads, Takes and Links I found out today that the Carbon Disclosure Project allows you to register and download their questionnaire responses. It would seem energy costs are a very small fraction of data center running costs, less than 1% of revenue for the hyperscalers. So, although increases in fossil prices will eat into the already meager/negative margins, I don’t think they will be decisive. rtl.chrisadams.me.uk/2024/01/how-...

I noticed Asha Bhoshle (who is 92) is featuring on the new Gorillaz album. This is amazing in itself, and got me into digging deeper into her career. From Wikipedia’s several articles on her discography, I counted she has recorded 7,918 songs in hindi and a total 289 songs in 12 other languages. 😳

Näinpä juuri. Toivon mukaan tuomiot johtavat osaltaan myös esitutkintaviranomaisen linjan skarppaantumiseen asiassa.

Jo toinen tuomio @idaeramaa.bsky.social kohdistuneista kunnianloukkauksista, hienoa! Vaikka tämä on tietysti vain pisara meressä, on silti tärkeää, että näihin etenkin naistoimittajien ja muiden julkisuudessa näkyvien naisten kohtaamiin vaientamisyrityksiin puututaan.

Iranian missiles (drones) seem to have taken down AWS data centre clusters in the UAE and Bahrain, causing disruption to institutions and apps that rely on the leading cloud provider in the region.

According to Reuters, "unidentified "objects" ‌struck an AWS data center in the United Arab Emirates [...] forcing authorities to eventually cut power to two clusters of Amazon data centers in the UAE." AWS Bahrain is down for apparently similar reasons.

If confirmed, this is probably be the first time that cloud infrastructure gets knocked down by military action. Given how much data and services governments, financial institutions and other major institutions have placed into a small number of hyperscale cloud data centres, they have become attractive targets to anyone seeking to disrupt society.

Also, given how U.S. and allied military forces increasingly use cloud and commercial AI in their operations, it seems inevitable that their adversaries may seek to target these infrastructures as "dual-use" facilities.

The Gulf has emerged as a particular hotspot for hyperscale cloud infrastructure. Interestingly the region hosts not only U.S. hyperscalers but also especially their Chinese rivals Alibaba Cloud, Huawei Cloud, and Tencent Cloud. I'll paste a rough map from our research in the comments. No reports of service disruption on the Chinese providers' status pages so far.

Thanks to Jaakko Kilpi and Kunhan (Colin) Li, PhD at the Digital Economic Security Lab DIESL for the heads-up!

Interesting post by professor Vili Lehdonvirta on LinkedIn. It’s too easy to forget that the cloud exists offline too, and can become a target in conflict.

Dorling cartograms are fun, but there’s been some discussion on the choices for scaling the circles. The TL;DR is that whatever you do, please don’t scale naively by radius. I’m pretty ambivalent about Flannery myself. Hackable Observable notebook:

USA:sta virtaa ulos osaavaa työvoimaa, joilla on usein (etä)työpaikka valmiina. Heitä kannattaisi yrittää houkutella Suomeenkin.

Viime vuonna 1. oleskelulupaa haki Suomesta n. 1 200 USA-laista, kasvua edellisvuoteen +15 %. Vielä siis kiinnostus kovin pientä. ”Miksiköhän?”

📊 Is Google’s new image generation model any good for data visualization? Short answer: impressive as Nano Banana 2 is, it is still far off from being a replacement for specialized visualization tools.

27.02.2026 08:48 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

I think one thing that might have thrown Gemini off here is that the data is quarterly, but the index is 2015=100, so 2015Q1 is actually 99.9 for one of the series and 99.6 for another.

26.02.2026 18:32 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0

So, although I am not quite yet afraid of losing my job to a machine, AI charting tools are definitely something I believe will become commonplace in a few years’ time – even if Gemini’s general purpose image generator approach will probably not be the winner in the race to make that happen.

Even if it got things wrong only 10% of the time, it would not be reliable enough for work, and Nano Banana 2 gets it wrong much more often. The promise is there, though, and I wouldn’ be surprised if we soon saw AI tools capable of creating basic charts from prompts w/ much more consistency. 11/

This quick test is, of course, not the final word on Gemini’s dataviz capabilities, which, to be sure, are impressive as a technical achievement. But for it to become a replacement for dedicated data visualization tools the results would need to be much more consistent. 10/

26.02.2026 18:23 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

So, what to make of this? Although even the previous version of Nano Banana was quite impressive with more qualitative infographics (see quoted post), I don’t think it is still near to becoming a replacement for having actual dataviz skills for showing quantitative data. 9/

This is unfair, but still I wanted to try one very hard thing: “Could you make it look like something out of Imhof’s “Atlas der Schweiz” (1967)?”

Well, of course not. To its credit, Gemini didn’t mess the (incorrect) choropleth part. It simply added some (mostly correct) topography and texture. 8/

The correct map, made by hand.

Let’s try mapping. “Please create a choropleth map of Switzerland showing the percentage of German speakers as a share of population per district (Bezirk) based on this data: [data]”

Unsurprisingly, this task was too hard for Gemini. Compare to the correct map on the right. 7/

Let’s try tweaking the chart: “Please make the following adjustments: Add vertical gridlines, add thousand separators to the labels, rotate the “Country” label and place it on top of the chart, and remove the chart subheading.”

Gemini made 3 out of 4 requested changes. Not bad, but not perfect. 6/

Some bar lengths are off by a few percent, but that is not unheard of in, for example, Excel, either. So, quite impressive in terms of precision, even if the chart doesn’t look anything special per se. 5/

Next: “Create a horizontal bar chart from the following data. Only visualize the data in column ‘Avg. area (km2)’ and only include the top 5 and bottom 5 countries. [data on municipalities by country in Europe]”

Surprisingly, Nano Banana 2 gets this more complicated task almost exactly correct! 4/
