Despite accumulating more than $6.1 million in fines since 2019, critics say Drax’s compliance measures still need tightening. “It likely was a slap on the wrist for the company, the cost of doing business,” Jen Duggan, Executive director of the Environmental Integrity Project, told Corcoran.

In collaboration with The Intercept, Land and Climate Review talk to experts and locals about Drax's operations in the US Southeast.

The new Land and Climate Review investigation, first reported in The Sunday Times @thetimes.com, comes just after the UK government extended Drax’s subsidies for another five years. It follows LCR's previous investigations that revealed more than 11,000 other permit breaches at Drax’s mills.

Camille Corcoran uncovered legal documents which revealed Drax breached permit limits at least 6,714 times at its Louisiana mills. These breaches include the release of hazardous and carcinogenic substances such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds.
