The NY Metro chapter of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) is outraged by the recent news of the termination of Dr. Mary T. Bassett, MD, MPH, from her role as Director of the François-Xavier Bagnoud (FXB) Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. As a former board member and current advisory board member of our chapter of PNHP, Dr. Bassett has been central to the work of the organization and to the movement for single payer healthcare for decades. She is a well respected and admired leader in the fight for health equity and racial justice. No employer should retaliate against a worker for their beliefs, especially when those beliefs are a principled expression of their professional ethics and human rights values. We stand with Dr. Bassett and condemn her harmful, politically motivated termination.
