Map showing location of Shatsky Conjugate, North America and the Insular terrane from 90 to 85 Ma. Two cases for Insular's position are shown: one offshore, and one onshore but further north.
Check out our article fresh out in @geosociety.bsky.social Special Paper 565! We reconcile geological and geophysical evidence for both flat slab Shatsky conjugate subduction & northward terrane translation in the western US at 90 Ma. Link to paper here: doi.org/10.1130/2025....

Congratulations Noam!
Ed and Alice in front of a sign saying AGU at the Washington convention center.
Weβre here! Let me know if youβd like to meet at any time during the week.
Selfie of Ed and Alice standing alongside the train at Washington Union Station
We made it to DC! We know that not everyone has the time or the money for long distance train travel, but if you are thinking about it then we would definitely recommend! #Train2AGU
Me holding a book: βTravels with Charleyβ by John Steinbeck. In the background you see Alice staring out of the train window.
Perfect reading for a journey across America! Itβs been 3 days since we left Austin (42 hours on a train) and we only have 2 hours to go to DC! #Train2AGU
View of a misty river out of the train window, alongside the top bunk in the sleeper car.
Woke up to a misty morning as the train rolls through Pennsylvania alongside the Casselman River. Itβs nice that the top bunks have windows too. We had a nice and refreshing sleep and are excited for some good science this afternoon @agu.org! #Train2AGU
Alice sitting across from me in the dining car. Two plates of fancy food are on the table along with glasses of wine and fizzy water.
The dining car on the Floridian is much fancier than the Texas Eagle! Itβs popular too, so we shared a table with two fellow travellers and had a lovely dinner. #Train2AGU
Alice sitting in our roomette on a train sewing a patch onto a quilt.
Speeding towards DC on the final leg of our #Train2AGU journey and @alicerturner.bsky.social has already got the sewing out.
We spent the night in Chicago and then had most of the day to explore the city! We hit up Lake Michigan, the Field Museum and the canals. #Train2AGU
Alice and Ed standing beneath a massive arch. We are next to a sign that says βGateway Arch National Parkβ.
View of the Mississippi River from the top of the arch. Two bridges cross the river.
Ed and Alice sitting on a train.
We had a fab day in St Louis and now we are off again on #Train2AGU. 5 hours until weβre in Chicago!
Sunrise over the Texas Eagle train on the platform of St Louis Union Station.
21 hours after we left Austin, we arrived in St Louis! We could be in Chicago by lunchtime and DC tomorrow, but weβre getting off to spend the day exploring! #Train2AGU
Train cabin converted into bunk beds. Alice is lying in the bottom bunk wrapped in our handmade National Park blanket.
As we roll through Arkansas on our #Train2AGU, itβs time to get some sleep. Goodnight everyone and goodnight @alicerturner.bsky.social π΄
Ed playing ticket to ride on a train. He seems to be slightly ahead of Alice at this stage of the game.
When taking the Amtrak, it is very important to have a ticket to rideβ¦
Ed in the dining car eating some Asian BBQ glazed salmon with rice and vegetables.
Hour 10 and itβs dinner time! The salmon was really yummy π #Train2AGU
Picture of the Fort Worth Central Station sign on the platform, with rail lines in the background.
5 hours into #Train2AGU and weβve made it Fort Worth. Had time to stretch our legs and chat to a guy on the platform. After hearing our accents he remarked that βThe UK went downhill after it closed its coal-fired power plants.β At least heβs (accidentally) doing his bit for #ClimateFriendlyTravel!
Selfie of Ed and Alice at a table in the diner carriage having breakfast.
1 hour into our 3 day train trip and weβve had breakfast! #train2AGU
You may have heard of #Train2EGU, but what about #Train2AGU?! @alicerturner.bsky.social and I are taking the train from Austin, TX to Washington DC for @agu.org! Follow our climate-friendly and #SlowTravel journey here. Firstly, waving goodbye to #UTIG @utaustin.bsky.social ππ»
My poster, titled β4D Plate Reconstructions: Linking Geodynamic and Kinematic Modellingβ
I had a great time @envleeds.bsky.social for the UK-SEDI meeting. Good to chat with the UK deep earth community about plate reconstructions!
Alice stands next to a projector with children sitting on the floor in front of her.
Last week @eclennett.bsky.social and I went to Leander Public Library to chat about earthquakes and volcanoes with the book club program! We had lots of fun with a spring-block slider and some coke and mentos!
Office selfie because itβs Friday 3pm @eclennett.bsky.social @ethan1.bsky.social
