BLITZ: McQueen's films always carry a layer of introspection & what the events his characters encounter bring out of them based on past experiences, but while I won't say it feels as if these characters are going through the motions, it kind of feels like the film is. Beautifully rendered though.

BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER: The Herdman’s alterations to tradition convey that what matters are not the details of the nativity play, but the meaning drawn from the story & yet, despite being clear as ever, it feels naive to believe those who need to will see their own reflections in such events.
RED ONE: Ugly as hell, but the script deserved better. Creative flourishes like the toy store transit system & reimagining Santa's deliveries as an action sequence really work, but that it also attempts to touch on how difficult it can be to find good in the world today implies an uncovered depth.
JUROR #2: More than its exploration of truth - specifically around how our self-interests & self-peace can be at odds w/ one another - this effortlesslly puts you in Hoult's position, making you question your choices in this moral quandary, while being captivating purely in its entertainment value.
ANORA: First half is the better half, yet it’s the characters that don't arrive until the second that make this as memorable as it is. Baker highlights a sad but true reality for those trying to find a way out; I just wish I liked & cared about Ani more. Fantastic needle drops throughout tho.
HERETIC: Operates in the "go big or go home" line of thought as it attempts to be a mind game, a mind fuck, & a critical reading of the organized religions that ring “as hollow & as capitalistic” as board games like Monopoly with all its "zany spinoffs”. Absolutely one of the best films of the year.
CONCLAVE: Succeeds more as an exploration of faith than the melodramatic conspiracy thriller it purports to be. There are notes of the latter, but the way these breadcrumbs ultimately render themselves moot tells us more about our fundamental dispositions than our fundamentalist constructions.
VENOM 3: Kind of admire what Hardy & co. did w/ this trilogy as I could have never predicted its next move, but I also experienced a series of existential crises while watching THE LAST DANCE that had me questioning both what we were doing & why. A waste on so many fronts. Ms. Chen a freak for sure.
SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE: The ever-expanding collage of indecencies done by institutions intended to help the least of us while catering only to those who contribute the most (especially financially) expands in this subtle, quiet drama where C. Murphy wrestles not with his faith but his principles.
HERE: The gimmick definitely restricts the film in certain aspects, making the performances feel awkward as a result, but as an experiment in attempting to capture the unremarkable and mundane in a novel, sometimes stunning fashion this montage of moments is effective when it most needs to be.
