Our paper is out in @Science! The Atlantic silverside spans Earth's steepest latitudinal gradient in coastal sea-surface temperature. Despite high gene flow, populations show clinal genetic variation in multiple locally adapted traits. doi.org/10.1126/scie...

Euglandina rosea, the Rosy Wolfsnail, aka cannibal snail, has chemical receptors that allow it to stalk other snails by following their slime trails. And i didnβt notice until looking at this picture that this guy was in HOT PURSUIT

This delicate sponge has a remarkably clever survival strategy.πͺβ¨οΈβ
β
Most sponges filter small plankton and bacteria from the water and pump them through their bodies. But the harp sponge (Chondrocladia lyra) uses small hooks along its vertical branches to trap and eat larger prey.

Finally, weβve solved a long-standing mystery: what tintinnid shells are actually made of:
A new class of biomaterial formed by remarkable structural proteins unique to tintinnids.
A major milestone after 3 years of work! Read about it in our preprint: doi.org/10.64898/202...

I am still actively looking for postdoc positions β please lmk if you (or your friends and colleagues) need a hardworking postdoc with field, lab, and bioinformatic skills!
I am broadly interested in evolution in the ocean, conservation and population genetics, and rapid evolution.

Meet the veliger larva - a tiny ocean drifter with a delicate shell and two ciliated βvelumsβ that look like fluttering ears. These velums help it swim through plankton and capture food.

Anyone good with marine flagellates? I thought this was quite a distinctive-looking chap with a reasonable chance of an ID? Any ideas?

A lovely look at the antennules of a Cirripedia cyprid larva (barnacle). They use the antennules almost like legs, walking across the substrate and exploring (chemically) for a place to settle. They also secrete the βcementβ that they use to attach themselves to their chosen spot!

This spermy-looking tadpole dude is the larva of a sea squirt, and itβs rare for me to find one so active! Enjoy! P.S. on my other platforms I coupled this with βEvery Sperm is Sacredβ by Monty Python. Here, youβll have to sing it yourselves!

The last time I saw this diatom species in plankton samples from Cromer Pier was back in the autumn of 2022, so Iβve been very delighted to see several over the last few weeks. Neocalyptrella robusta. This one is asexually reproducing.
