He originally planned to travel from Tehran through Siberia, but was denied entry. After changing routes, he was ejected from Afghanistan and had to turn back and take a steamer to India, and then another steamer from Calcutta to Hong Kong.

In 1886, Englishman Thomas Stevens became the first person to cycle around the world. He did it on a penny farthing, with a raincoat that doubled as a tent & bedroll. His handlebar bag held fresh socks, an extra shirt, and a pocket revolver.
