I just discovered The Adrian Brinkerhoff Poetry Foundation, which pairs audiovisual readings of poems. Jack Gilbert's amazing poem comes alive as it is performed. Especially that last 12 lines, after the quiet rumination leading up to them.

I'm deeply sorry for his loss, and yours. I am a former ICU nurse- and because of that I can extrapolate that he was an intelligent, caring person. He did not deserve to be murdered for his convictions. This appalling world....

I was sickened before I knew who she was- any decent human being would be- but the details of this good life, of a mother (daughter, wife, child, accomplished poet, unique person and life- insert your qualifier...) make it even more poignant and horrifying. We cannot bury such atrocities.

Isn't it marvelous? In the cold depth of winter's clutch, you can listen to this reading by Arisa White, feel the serenity of summer's fleeting days enter you like a sigh. Note the use of anaphora, in which the poem becomes an uttered prayer

This is how enjambment can work in a poem. Bridge 77 on the Macclesfield Canal allows a horse to cross the canal without having to untie it from the canal boat.
