RNA splicing generates a functionally specialized Rep protein isoform in geminiviruses — enabling timely control of the viral cycle. Strikingly, similar strategies might have evolved in DNA viruses infecting different kingdoms: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Spearheaded by @delphinem-p.bsky.social!

Splicing was discovered in adenoviruses, but was thought to be only anecdotal in plant viruses... We may need to revisit plant viral transcriptomes and proteomes!

How do plant viruses cause symptoms? Are these developmental alterations functionally relevant? Man Gao, Enmanuel, et al. found that TYLCV does so through a host-mimicking domain in its C4 protein, co-opting a plant protein family - to attract the insect vector! www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
