I've been thinking about the Rangers' decision to display One Riot, One Ranger, and what it says about who this team is for. So I wrote about that. It's a big ol' bummer.

Back on the first point, I think perhaps it's a good thing that PIs who have been treating their grad students as postdocs as work horses could have their AI now. Perhaps they should stop working w research assistants for the net benefits of everyone involved and the good of the research culture.

4-5 years ago there were MDs like Lucy McBride crowing about the urgency of normal, getting kids back to school. There were PR hacks like David Zweig supporting them. Now kids are being sent to immigration detention, getting measles & these folks are nowhere to be found. It was never about the kids.
It should not be preferable for a student to use an automated tool rather than ask their tutors for help. Until we address that basic collapse of confidence and trust, we will be horrified by each new technological development. 7/7

At the same time - since we are nominally & ostensibly a "public university" - the state should have funded this long ago. That the state government retains ~full regulatory control over university decisions like this, while being a minority funder now, is bad policy, like all unfunded mandates.

Yeah I think at this point re UBI while I have seen some debate about its effects in rich countries there's just now a lot of empirical evidence that we can actually simply transfer money to people in the global south and its really just... good. We should just do it. Justice and expedience align.
