Just heard about Fredrick Brennan's death. He was a genuine example of how a person can try to make right the things they did wrong and do better. He got 8chan taken down and essentially deplatformed. And he never misrepresented who he was or the mistakes he made. We could all do that more.

Just found out Fredrick Brennan died. I only met him in person once, but I always had a lot of respect for his personal growth and ownership of his past. More than anything, I respected his commitment to changing himself for the better.

He was a good guy. So it goes.

I was psyched to learn youโ€™re Arkansan! Teens have so many questions like for example I explained to them why I donโ€™t use the term โ€œCaucasianโ€ & the termโ€™s history. Their response was โ€œso youโ€™re not white?โ€ Love them.

Thank you so much for sharing! As a white Arkansan teacher, Iโ€™ve had so many students asking each other questions about race and ethnicity that people around them just tell them to hush up, and they just stay confused. Iโ€™m so glad youโ€™re talking about this

Iโ€™m a professor &today was surreal. I did a lesson on the swatting at colleges across the U.S. including at one in my state. I had my students analyze the rhetorical situation of a social media post about it and then during work time one of my students informed me of the Minneapolis shooting

@knowrogan.bsky.social I wanted to say thank you for this podcast bc you have helped me breakdown the cognitive dissonance and logical fallacies and paradoxes of the ideology in online fandom spaces. Hearing your analysis of rhetoric has kept my mind sharp!

@ojutel.bsky.social I wanted to say thanks again for ur guest spot on QAA! u inspired me to research fandom spaces & I have discovered that free speech absolutism is rampant & that this rhetoric has been used in fandom to push the Overton Window within the space to allow/protect Alt-Right content

Williamsโ€™s argument has found purchase among journalists he might consider fellow travelers โ€” Yascha Mounk, Bari Weiss and Conor Friedersdorf, among others. Itโ€™s also not so new; it might remind some people of the debates about political correctness that raged in the 1990s, though Williams might balk at the comparison. He would prefer that we not invoke history (or context, or ideology, or ideas of โ€œmoral clarityโ€) in our debates. Heโ€™d rather we understand current events through the facts of what is happening in the here and now. We shouldnโ€™t have tried, he says, to understand the killing of Trayvon Martin on a continuum of racial violence that includes the lynching of Emmett Till, because doing so flattened the incident into a racial drama and did not deal with specific individuals and their actions. Similarly, he argues, the murder of George Floyd should not be seen in the context of racism and police behavior, but in the light of Floydโ€™s poverty and drug addiction (and I suppose we are not allowed then to contextualize those factors in terms of race, or the history of labor markets, or the pharmaceutical industry โ€” they are just individual characteristics).

a sharp review of the chatterton book that notes the authorโ€™s total refusal to engage with history and his insistence that a โ€œseriousโ€ or โ€œgood faithโ€ discussion requires participants to exist in an eternal present where individuals exist free of context www.washingtonpost.com/books/2025/0...
