Slide titled “External and internal drivers behind the formation, vegetation succession, and carbon balance of a subarctic fen margin,” followed by a list of authors. Below the title are two side-by-side color maps labeled (a) and (b) showing a subarctic peatland area. The left map illustrates spatial patterns of exchange flux with a color scale ranging from blue (low/negative values) to red (high/positive values). The right map shows differences in groundwater table (GWT) levels, with colors ranging from blue (lower values) to yellow and red (higher values). Legends identify peatland types such as fens, bogs, and treed fens, and both maps include a north arrow and scale bar. The Wet Horizons logo appears at the bottom
Are expanding northern peatlands cooling or warming the climate? It depends on how they develop🧪

Drainage lowers groundwater levels, exposing peat to oxygen and accelerating its decomposition, releasing stored carbon as CO₂. At the Estonian Open Lab, the project is testing controlled water level manipulation, gradually raising groundwater levels to slow peat oxidation and reduce carbon losses.

In southern Estonia, the ForPeat Open Lab is exploring how forestry and #peatland ecosystems can coexist more sustainably. Located in Rumba, the study site covers 50 hectares within a 500-hectare spruce-dominated peatland forest, an area shaped by decades of forestry and drainage.

📊 Within ForPeat, the scientific focus is clear: comprehensive greenhouse gas monitoring and ecosystem assessment. The site offers a unique opportunity to quantify carbon dynamics before and after rewetting interventions. At Karlstifter Moor, our Open Lab has just installed an eddy covariance tower.

🍃 This site focuses on a degraded raised bog within the Karlstifter Moor complex. Over the past century, drainage lowered the water table and allowed woody vegetation to expand. Now, restoration planning is underway, with rewetting as the main objective to restore the bog’s natural hydrology.

Collage titled “Citizens Power Wetland Science” showing citizens photographing wetland information boards, scanning QR-code signs, and observing wetland vegetation during field activities.
Two people conducting citizen science monitoring in a forested wetland, standing within a marked plot; text explains benefits of citizen science such as covering more ground and filling monitoring gaps.
Person walking along a wooden boardwalk through a green wetland forest; overlay text invites people to take part in wetland science and learn about wetlands.
Group of people gathered at a wetland site with overlaid maps highlighting citizen science locations in Finland, Denmark, and Germany, and a call to follow Wet Horizons to learn more about wetlands.
Wetlands are not just a ecosystems:
They are places of knowledge, culture, and life.
Citizen science plays a crucial role in safeguarding and restoring wetlands.
World Wetlands Day today reminds us of this

ForPeat: Restoring Europe’s Forested Peatlands for Climate and Biodiversity
Discover how the EU-funded ForPeat project is restoring Europe’s forested peatlands to fight climate change and protect biodiversity.
🌍 ForPeat is working to change this. The project develops sustainable land management and restoration approaches to strengthen soil carbon storage, improve soil health and support biodiversity in forested peatlands.

🍃 #Peatlands store vast amounts of #carbon and play a key role in #water regulation and #biodiversity protection. Yet decades of drainage and land-use change have left many European peatlands degraded, turning former climate allies into sources of greenhouse gas emissions.
