People who tout the supposed "promise" of James Baker, George HW Bush, or any other US official that NATO wouldn't "expand" neither understand the United States nor NATO.
First, the US isn't a dictatorship in which the President can unilaterally make binding agreements on behalf of the nation. 1/2
Too many people talk about "peace" - in the sense the lack of armed conflict - as an absolute good. They are in agreement with aggressors and dictators, for whom that kind of "peace" means the absence of resistance to their control.
Worthwhile peace requires freedom, dignity, and human rights.
