A tanner was 6d, a thruppenny bit was 3d - they are old names based on the old coinage. Thruppenny bits were out of use before decimalisation but tanners were worth 2.5p after decimalisation.
A tanner was always half a shilling, it's just the number of pennies that changed.

Also known as a florin. IIRC they became 10p and shillings became 5p - roughly half their original value in old pence: 24d and 12d respectively.

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Palais de Chaillot or Trocadéro to get that view: the Champ de Mars is visible on the other side of the tower.

I don't imagine there's anyone who studied STEM subjects at A level that coupled them with English. Maths yes, but English?

Amazon Web Services. If you've ever heard of cloud computing - this is Amazon's offering in that market where companies rent computer power and space off someone else rather than own their own computers.

Business - when I was living in France. Ramadan was interesting: lunch was only available via room service (out of sight, out of mind).

The Indian visa website crashed when I tried to put in the full answer to the question "which countries have you visited in the last 10 years". It worked OK when I left a few out.
Otherwise: all UK countries, Ireland, France (lived), Spain, Portugal, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg,...

It's simply that we are not "customers" of public services: we can't take our custom elsewhere - especially HMRC!

Nice try but several inaccuracies on the terminology and current practices of change-ringing. Change ringers generally frown on those who call themselves campanologists (pretentious ****s!?).

Just replace "AI" with "automation" and it probably make more sense.
Also trying to treat users of government services as customers is fundamentally wrong: we can't take our custom elsewhere - especially HMRC...
